The weekend is going to start off right on Friday because we should be getting the Can mount. It was my son's 2nd duck - Hen Can. Here is with the bird last year:

I try to get away from as many other hunters as I can and sometimes it results in not being where the birds want to be. It has not hurt the hunting too much in the past and made it a lot more enjoyable. I'm making one big change this year, going from 60 to 100 decoys down to 31 flocked (14 Cans, 2 GE, 2 Gads, 13 Coots) decoys. This is what I am loading in the boat on Friday:

Scott,

Russ and I are going out for the first time on Saturday. We haven't had much time to scout so we have elected to not launch the layouts this weekend. We have elected for a bank hunt, which will probably result in alot of coffee being drank with a big plate full of eggs and bacon cooked on shore of course. What info have you heard. I guess we are hunting mid lake, the only down side to that is all the people. When we layout we do not have to worry about that. You still down on the lower end?

Todd, most likely that is where I will end up but I did locate a couple of other "out of the way" spots last year that I might go to. Having the 115HO etec on the back of the boat opened up some new spots. During the daytime, I can run 40mph with the boat fully loaded. Heading out before sunrise is still slow - seen too many people out on the lake with NO running lights to do much more than a fast troll. If it had not been for the wake wave, I would have run up on one of them last year (4 guys in an overloaded little jon vs my boat is no match).

That will be cool to get that mount back! You should be a proud papa! Good luck on your opener and season!!!

Your spread looks great by the way! Should take no time at all to set out!

I like your spinners painted like bluebills. Do you think they are more effective than having them looking like mallards?

Ben, before they made BB spinners we used to use the airduck spinners painted black and white out on the sounds. the BBs out there really seemed to like them!

I don't know, but there are very few mallards where I hunt and I "think" the black/white shows up better.

I've got 2. I don't use them all the time, but when I do I use the hen. I figure everyone has a drake so maybe they won't flare as bad once they get close. Maybe I'll paint my other one as a bluebill.

Yea I have noticed over the years that there are alot crazier people out there than me. Good luck to you guys, I will let you know what we see on the upper end.

Spinners attracting BBs...now you're talking my language, of course I get a denser pattern with a load of #4s...but at close range, anything will work

By the way Scott its awesome that you've already got your boy doing so well at duck hunting. I'm sure he could show me a thing or two already.

He is loving it. He won the Alabama / SE Regional Duck Calling contest a few weeks ago.

He didn't get THAT from me. There is a reason I like hunting divers. :)
