20' Roughneck Jon Boat Kicker Motor??

We have a 20' Lowe Roghneck Jon Boat with a 40 HP Motor,
And would like to put a kicker motor on it (better then rowing!)
What do you guys thinks would be the smallest motor we can get away with?
We are looking at a 5 HP, But I am worried it would not push the barge!
Thanks, for any help...

You don't need as much power as you think. The reason is that the kicker is not going to plane the boat, the most if can do is push it at is hull speed. So, you dont need a lot of power. I'd say a 5 or 6 hp is fine.

It is true that the kicker won't push the hull over hull speed no matter how big (up to 15 or 20 hp), but you also have to consider that you need some good hp to move a rig that size over swells. 5 hp will easily reach hull speed on a flat day, I'm not sure how it would do against wind and swells. I would want a little more, myself. Ideally a high thrust model to spin a big prop. I would go for a 10, myself.

We hunt lake Nippising in Ontario Canada, (For Blue Bills) a large lake that gets very choppy at times.
All we want the kicker motor Just in case, we have a problem with our motor, to just get us to safety.
The motor we are looking at has a very small prop, You said that a Big Prop is better.
(how much better??)

Thanks, for the help...

We use a 9.9 on our 22' SeaArk. Its all the kicker wants in windy/ choppy conditions but it will get you home. I've tried a high thrust prop and didn't notice much difference. A kicker that is reliable is most important.

Not a high thrust prop, but a high thrust motor is the ideal. High thrust motors are geared for the low RPMs when pushing a heavy load off plane. They spin a bigger prop at the lower speeds you will encounter off plane and have a lot more thrust than a conventional outboard under those conditions.

If I was buying new, that is what I'd get for a boat like that. I'd look at 8-10 hp high thrust motors.
