2003 25 Merc has no spark

Carl,
Can't answer your question about checking the stator. Have you confirmed that the fuses are all good (confirmed with meter not just visual)? I assume it cranks but won't fire? Mercury may show a schematic on their parts lookup but that may not be any help with the meter check of the stator.

Stator. Or switch pack. That?s what I?m thinking.

Carl,
I don't have any service specs for checking good or bad parts. Besides the stator or switch pack it could also be a bad "trigger assembly". I believe I have the right parts diagram selected for your motor in the screen shot. Another remote possibility is a coil, however this motor has two coils and the chance of them both going at the same time are remote. The other three suspects would affect the firing of both cylinders. I'd lean towards a bad trigger but can't really give you a good reason why or how to test it.

Thanks Dave.
I'm going to go outside after dark and pull the plugs, give it a few pulls & see if I can see spark.
If I have spark, its back to the fuel system.
If really no spark, then I might have to get professional help.

Carl,
No need to wait till dark just grab the plug wire and give the starter rope a pull. It will let you know if there's spark.

When I was a kid we had a lawn mower with the little metal "stop motor" tab with plastic end over the spark plug. you pushed the plastic to ground out the motor and stop it.
One day I was done mowoing and I saw that the plastic was missing but pushed the tab anyway to shot off the motor.
After I got up off the ground, I got a plastic handled screw drive to shut that damn thing off.

After dark, Pulled the plugs and grounded them on block and gave her a few pulls. No little blue flashes. Unhooked the kill switch from the wiring system and tried again. No blue flashes. I found a good wiring diagram and parts diagram, I?ll read up on checkin the ohms again and check the switch and stator tomorrow. Either way, not good.

Maybe this is something on this motor or not.

I had a motor (much smaller) that wouldn't spark. I recall there was a pin on the flywheel that kept it in sync (think it was the flywheel). That pin had broken and the flywheel had shifted a little bit. This caused the spark to not spark. Just throwing it out there. That is about the extent of my mechanical knowledge.

Chris, from What I?m reading it?s most likely the trigger or switch box. Stator rarely go bad and both coils wouldn?t fail at the same time.
More to come....

Good luck, I thought the switch box was more of an omc problem. I had a buddies 40 VRO just stop, of course we were in the middle of a lake and needed rescuing. Replaced the switch box and ran perfect.

Those outboards have a mind of their own.

I would try using the BFH on some of those gizmos on the side of the motor. As a start, just get the bfh out and set it near by to incentivize proper function.
