Great photo album Mike. I really like the grayling shots, I have always wanted to catch one. Also, the trout that is in the picture with whom I guess is your son holding it, is that a Dolly Varden/Bull trout? There is also a shot of some birds on a snow covered road, are they spruce grouse?

I can't remember what species of fish that was - it might have been an Arctic Char. There was some debate about it and I just can't remember what the verdict was. The grouse on the road covered in snow were in fact Spruce Grouse. We had lots of them around last fall. Actually we had lots of every species of grouse around last fall.

What's going on in NJ these days?

Hi Mike-thanks for that. I went to college in Maine and never saw a spruce grouse but there were some there, although you were not allowed to shoot them. I never even thought about Arctic Char, but then again, you are pretty far north, so that makes sense. Things in NJ have been somewhat Yukon like this past winter, with frozen rivers, bays, and a lot of snow for here. As for living in NJ, there are high property taxes, high sales taxes, high income taxes, corrupt politicians with corrupt friends, decent waterfowl hunting, good saltwater fishing(delayed this year due to ice and snow), and beautiful countryside with some very nice towns and the Atlantic ocean to the east. Pretty much the same as it has always been. This past duck season was good until it got really cold, when everything started to freeze hard, and the marshes, where I hunt, became inaccessible.

By the way, that black ice picture a couple of months ago was awesome.

Corrupt politicians? You must be mistaken, what kind of person would run for public office and not try to serve the public's best interest?

If you've got a minute read this one about some of our guys.

Neatest picture was the one of Meg and her friends by the helicopter.....
We watched Mac and her from little kids....Meg not so much as Mac but it was always neat to see them both....don't recall having seen a picture of her since the Pacific adventure.....like Mac she's grown up.....damn we got old...you older than me given the gray hair I'm seeing, (you should stick to the black spikey haired hat makes you look younger).....
Lots of neat stuff there I hadn't seen, (missed?)......

Mike,

I sure like your photos. Would love to be able to know the history behind that old revolver you found. One wonders could it be old enough that a homesteader or prospector my have lost it or maybe just wasn't fast enough when that Kodiak came around the bend in the river while fly fishing and became dinner? Like Steve says it's something watching the kids grow up on this site. It's also a tribute to the site that we want to hang out here long enough to see these kids grow up. I know there isn't another site I frequent that I can say that about.

Mike-

there were some absolutely stunning photos in your albums. The brown bear was awesome and some of those caribou were huge (at least by my non-big game hunting standards).

Your decoys are also beautiful. I am really glad that you shared your site. Just absolutely stunning countryside.

Ain't it the truth. With roughly half of Illinois's governors in my life time doing or have done time. Then seeing an article in the star originating in Evanston, IL it doesn't seem like we're all that distant.

I'm with you guys on this being a special place to "hang out". There are so many people on here with many, many years of history, even though we've never met, and the "new" guys all seem like quality people. I don't know another forum like this one.

If I had to make a list of all the help I've gotten here with decoys, boats, motors, dogs, baseball bats, travel tips, ... its endless. Its funny too because when I found this page in 1999, I was so new to the interweb I didn't even know what a forum was. This site was the first place I found and never looked for another one for years. My old iMac couldn't handle the Refuge advertising so I missed out on all that entertainment. Not having any TV for the last 15 years probably made the internet even more interesting to me.

Remember that kid Charlie that had his own webpage with the countdown timer to opening day? Remember life before youtube when you still had to look things up in books? What about when good reference pictures of birds were hard to come by?

At first I started keeping that photo album page because nothing like Facebook or Photobucket existed, now I just keep paying for the domain name out of nostalgia I guess. My webguy doesn't mind being compensated in fish and homemade sausage so I'll ride that train as long as I can.

Steve, those girls were doing their version of the Charlie's Angels team pose - see? Radio, Karate kick, gun. Meg is turning 15 tomorrow and gong for her Learner's License. The sidewalks will not be safe for a while.

Nice photos...Envy the photo of you sitting in the corner painting in the lounge chair with the scenary in the background...If I did that you would see a concrete jungle...
