Anthony happy to see my black duck and broadbill made it into your photos. Heard it was a great show big Congratulations to my friend and mentor Paul Dobrosky for winning Best of Show!!! Paul is a selfless person always willing to lend a helping hand, honest critique and share his knowledge. Paul you have taught me so much about carving I can't thank you enough!!! Wish I could have been there in person!!

I drove 3 hours each way from PA, just to walk around.
I had a few nice decoys in my hands; an old canvasback from eastern shore, and a few contemporary carvers from Jersey in Delaware river style.
I also had a nice conversation with Clarence Fennimore.

Nice morning.

It was a nice time. I've Never been there before. Neat to see the old natural cork birds. I was pleased to see my friend Greg ( a verity descendant) win the people's choice with his version of a family style decoy. Fun time!

Good morning, Anthony~

Thanks for posting these great shots! I notice from your photos and my own that I missed a few opportunities to shop for a few items that should be in the Sanford collection....

As you know, we were victims of our own success. Whereas we had thought 50 entries would define success for our first-ever Contemporary Decoy Exhibition, we wound up with 106 birds. So, lots of on-the-fly adjustments - grabbing more tables and re-arranging birds, etc. Lots of ideas on how to correct and improve for Year 2.....

In no particular order, here are a bunch more photos I found a little time to take:

We had 2 classes of decoys: The true gunners are the Al McCormick Gunning Class and the fancier birds - with the finer carving and painting that usually keep them on mantels and bookshelves is the Shang Wheeler Heritage Class. I will probably miss some attributions but there are a few duckboats.net Shang Wheeler Class birds here:

Glenn Sweet's "Chauncey Wheeler" Hen Broadbill
Ed Gagne's pair of Lessers
George Williams' feeding Brant
Paul Dobrosky's Drake Broadbill

IF I MISSED YOUR BIRD - PLEASE CHIME IN!

Because of the surfeit on entries, the tables were way too crowded. The birds on the risers are Long Island antique birds - to show our origins and the evolution.

That McCormick Class Drake Black in the lower right corner is by Pete Revicki.

Our Narrative describes the history of decoy shows - especially the old U S National here on Long Island - and brings us up-to-date. It also asks carvers and viewers to share their thoughts about the Contemporary Decoy Exhibition with us.

The "judging" was done by the audience - a Peoples' Choice approach. Attendees filled out their paper ballots with the codes on the yellow tags for their favorite birds.

Plenty of nice artwork around....

The Show is mostly about antique decoys (pay no attention to those Whales in the background!).

If you were there with a camera - let's see more!

All the best,

Looks like it was a great show Steve my cork black duck was just in front of your burnt cork one which is very nice btw

My hen broadbill was the bird to the left of the Al McCormick sign

Steve,
Thanks again for all the hard work you and Craig put into this. It was a great time meeting some new people from the page and talking hunting, decoys and life with them. Bill and I where tried, but had a blast.
Thanks Pete

Looks like a great show. Love the black duck to mallard ratio in the photos--you won't see that at Cabela's!

The photo of the gentleman with a black duck and a drake whistler is all about my duck hunting.

I see a Bill Embacher broadbill in one of those last pictures as well as a John Bourbon broadbill nearby. These pictures are great. I think I should have maybe had my baby bills in with the McCormicks. I can't wait to actually be able to go next year and hopefully enter more than just two birds. There are some incredible carvers out there.

Eddie

Good eye Ed, that is one of my bluebills. The turned head hen whistler is mine also. I took it off the gang rig to come to this show, and it'll go back on to be hunted next year! I bought that antique book that Steve pictured. I like that there were birds in attendance that had actually been wet once or twice. Steve, how do you feel about next year's contest giving birds that have been hunted a "point adder"?
This was my first time ever on Long Island. I found a lot to like. Parts of it reminded me of my native Eastern Shore of Md. We took the Port Jefferson ferry home, which allowed us to see parts of Conn on the way home I hadn't seen getting there. All in all it was a nice trip.
Thanks to Steve Sanford and all the other folks who helped make this happen.
John Bourbon
