Quick update, that was all the birds that decoyed. Two buffies came in around 6:45, hen & this years drake. The cans came in a little later, perfect split, one down each side of the boat. I folded mine, turn around and see my boy trying to get the gun to go off, he fumbled the safely and the second one just flew on!
We had a few big flocks of gadwalls check us out and 2 pairs of redheads, but neither would commit & come in.
Other than that, we really didn't see much flying.
Word got out last week about the big divers being down. While we didn't have a boat close to us, all the grassbeds east of us had boats on them, some 2 or 3 boats. They did a lot of shooting, but not sure what they were shooting at (found out later, see below)
Did some scouting and found very few birds anywhere. All the grassbeds that had no hunters didn't have any ducks either. Don't know where the divers went, but very few to be found today.
Talked to a warden I work with at the ramp and he said most everyone he checked had coots & buffies, very few gadwalls and just a couple of scaup and redheads, much less than compared to last weekend. He said from what he has seen, the scaup really hadn't shown up yet.
We scouted a couple of bays to the north that normally hold hundreds of ducks and found
zero.
Overall, I think I've gotten lucky these first three hunts. From what i have seen scouting, we really dont have many ducks here yet.
Gotta change my game plan for tomorrow, I am either taking a long run to a spot where the bluebills go when pressured or head to MS Sound for redheads. Not sure yet.
Here's my can. Warden said he thinks this is the first one they checked this year.
Biggest damn can I ever killed, had a thick layer of fat under the skin, full plumage already. If I didn't have a can on the wall already, he would have headed to the taxidermist. Instead, he's jerky (I would roast him but I centered him with the pattern, breast is all tore up.
