4-H Rodeo

The kids asked me to attend the rodeo this past weekend, so I did. I really enjoy taking pics of them and to be honest, I am usually blown away by how darn good these young people are.
It reminded me of when I first moved here and was teaching 4th grade. I had one of my students, Jacob, come into the classroom one morning limping quite badly. I said, "Who did you have a fight with, Jacob?" He looked at me with this subtle smile and said, " Well, I'll admit that I put up a good fight but lost. The bull won!" Fast forward 10 years and I was having lunch at Acosta's. In walked Jacob and his employer. After some small talk I said, "It looks like you have already started with a new tooth collection." He gave me a toothy grin, showing off his new partial that replaced his upper right front tooth and replied, "Last fall, the bull got me good. When mom and dad said that they would no longer pay for any medical and or dental bills caused from riding bulls, I decided that it was a good time to quit."

This is a 3rd grade girl. I had her in a math class not too long ago. Anyway, Marissa, was coming up to the first barrel when all of a sudden her horse decided to put on brakes. The pics will show you what happened. Her teacher came running over, helped brush her off after making sure she was all right, then helped her mount the horse again. She finished her race and everyone applauded her courage.

This young gal is now a 6th grader. What a great kid! She spends her summers on her grandfather's ranch breaking horses for the sale barn. By the way, her horse's name is Charlie!

Christopher is really improving, too. He is now a 6th grader. Last year he was the first ever to take a Rio turkey on Bosque del Apache NWR. They had a very successful youth hunt there.

This young gal is either and 8th or 9th grader now. It is true when they say that time flies when you are having fun.

These next few riders are in the 6 to 8 year old bracket.

This girl is only 6 years old and she ran the course in 22.271 seconds. She will be fun to watch in the future.

Couldn't resist this shot.

Al, great photos.
The concentration and determination on each child's face is incredible.
Amazing what a 40# kid can do with a 1000# animal.

Enjoyed your rodeo show! Question what's that rope/strap on some of those youngsters left wrists?

Al,
Reminded me of a trip out west last year. I took my youngest (then 3 yo) out to Los Lunas, NM for a funeral last year. Well we ended up at a bull riding event on a Saturday night and Brock just had to do the "mutton busting" (riding a sheep)! We were the only gringos out of the 500 Chavezes at the event. We didn't care, he borrowed a jacket a helmet and he rode his sheep for a full 2 seconds and we all had a blast!! Good times...

WOW a lot of intense looks on those young faces.

You are exactly correct, Jack. Just like kids who play any sport and are keenly into it. The competition can be fierce but yet when all said is done, they seem to get along well when it is over.

Thanks so much, Paul. Since ranching is a way of life around here and so many kids aspire to do so, it is only normal that they seem so "natural" around animals----horses and cows. When you see little kids walking underneath someone's horse at first you want to gasp---run and save the child---but now I know better. It is just the way it is. You get kicked--well that is just part of the job! Have a broken rib from it, well it will heal in time! You'll get over it. Interesting outlook that they have. Part of the job.

Hi Jim,
Since my dear wife is now in Wisconsin for a couple of weeks, I have taken the time to go to more rodeo events. In fact, there is one this Saturday in celebration with Cinco de Mayo! Should be a good one. By the way, Jim, the small rope is used as a persuader to get the horse to run faster, especially down the final stretch. You'll notice that most of the kids wear spurs and they'll use them instead of a rope or strap.
Glad you liked the rodeo.

Al - Beautiful stuff..........great captures.............most would make great gifts for the kids.

Thanks so much, Sarge. I appreciated your comments. Last year when I was long term subbing for 6 weeks, I printed out about 20, 8 1/2x11 photos of this one girl in class who won the barrel racing event in her age class. Used it as a bulletin board in class. When she got to class the first thing she did was run to office to call her mom and have her come in and look at them. Well, now they are in the family photo album. Love doing that.
One year when I was teaching here---prior to digital, I know I spent $1200 on film and processing, for all the pictures of the kids I took during class. Even took a first day pic, then with one week to go at the end of school, took another pic of the student in the exact same spot of one particular bulletin board. Truly amazing the changes that you can see within those nine months. I always had duplicates made so that by the end of the year each kid was taking home maybe 50 to 75 pics for their parents to keep. Used to have a 16 foot bulletin board just jammed with 4x6 shots of the kids and the different things they did at school and or out on the playground.

What a wonderful photo of Brock. Mutton busting will be happening here this Saturday at 1:00PM. Not the best time for taking photos but hopefully I can adjust for that. You were only about 70 miles north of where Bev and I live. I do want to know as a new Gringo in the area last year, did you do the ultimate state question? Do you want red or green?
Al

Al,
My mom is from Los Lunas so we would go back yearly to see the grandparents when we were young. I'm actually 1/2 Gomez, so I'm more of a "coyote" than "gringo"!! I'm a big fan of red and green, but I'd have to vote for hatch green chile hands down! It's funny, at Thanksgiving we alway top our mashed potatoes off with red chile gravy. The Alabama wife just hasn't been able to handle that yet. I'm always saying, "this is good, but it would be better with garlic, a tortilla, and pinto beans". I'm hungry....

Take care,
Brian

Brian, I just got home after taking a spin to San Antonio. Stopped at Acosta's Family Restaurant and had a breakfast burrito smothered in green. My, oh my, was it ever good. Good to hear that you know all about the state question.
