Yeah I definitely like the price of tohatsu but if I ever decide to sell, they don't have the reputation of a Yamaha or Honda. That's the only sticking point I've found on tohatsu.
I don't know if this is still the case, but about 10 years ago I made a trip to southern Belize and spent time on a bunch of boats for shuttles, a couple of days of fishing, and a group snorkel trip. I was surprised to see that just about every boat had a relatively new 4 stroke. One of the boat owners explained to me that fuel was really expensive down there--at least double what it would be in the US, and it just was not cost effective to run a 2 stroke. Most of these boats were putting on a lot a miles. The reef with the dive and fishing spots was 20+ miles off shore, so every charter involved at least 40 miles there and back.
A lot of these guys were making the long run down to Honduras once a week to buy cheaper fuel over the border. Things might be different in Mexico.
Tohatsu is still in my top two due to price, warranty and availability. I don't have any plans to be selling in the near future, just trying to plan for a worst case scenario. Looks like I may have a plan if I ever need to sell [].
