A bit more summer night time fun

Well, Steve and I got the call from Jamie (one of our waterfowl biologists with FWC) and we were headed out to meet him at Goodwin. Time for our hopefully annual duck banding palooza. Last year the targets were wood ducks. This year it was Mottled Ducks that we were going to band.

We met Jamie at the check in station, sprayed and sprayed and sprayed with bug spray and headed out to go run some shallow impoundments and snatch mottled ducks off the water.

Unfortunately it's not the best situation to actually get pictures as we're scooping birds off the water, but it is fuuuuun. Wind in our faces from the air boat, full moon night, air boat cruising around, you hanging half off the boat getting soaked as you try to catch the Mottled Ducks which prove themselves to be diving masters. We've gotten a pretty good system going...either I or Steve will be snatching and then handing the snatched ducks to the other, who then gets to drop them in the chute to the big pen.

Once we have collected from the impoundments as thoroughly as possible, we find a spot in the marsh and band. Luckily the skeeters weren't as fierce as expected. Jamie does the banding and checking out of the ducks, I play record keeper and Steve takes pictures. Pretty good system....

We have a problem here in FL with mallards breeding with mottled ducks creating those nasty hybrids. So, in addition to checking sex, molt or not, and age the mottled ducks all get checked for hybrid status or not.

Once they've passed the test, they get a pretty piece of jewelry.

We did have a chance for a couple of photo ops with some of the guests of honor:

Once the jewelry has been given, pictures taken of a few, the ducks are then let go. Normally we just open our hands and they're in a hurry to get out of there. On occassion though, they'll stick around and see what's going on.

This year, was a really special trip. Last year we hoped to see some Black Bellied Whistling Ducks. Didn't happen. This year we hoped for the same thing. And lordy did it happen. We found a pair, and then after looking closer we realized there were 18 itty bitties to go with that pair!

That was just too freaking cool.

Later though, we found another BB adult and then looking closer we found some bout 3/4 grown babies. What was really neat was that apparently the momma had adopted a mottled duck baby that needed fostering.

They were all big enough to get some jewelry, so there are now five BBs out there with some bands.....

My how pretty you are

Steve is a sucker for their pretty pink legged selves so had a great time have sweet nothings whispered in his ear...

And one of the babies decided to just chill out in my arms after being cuddled by Steve

Once the Momma and all the babies were banded, it was time for the release of the babies....they went first and then momma

We collected 56 birds that night and 6 of them were already banded, one of the bands with a lot of wear on it.

What a blast that night was!!! Definitely one of the highlights of my summer

What a great experience to have. Thanks so much for the pictures, Dani. Why banding at night verses day? Did you sweet talk any of the banded birds to head to where your blind will be this year?
Thanks for the post.

The noise and the light from our q-beam confuses them in the dark. It makes it possible for us to catch them. If it were daylight, we'd stand no chance at catching many.

I would love to shoot a duck that I helped band, but at the same time I think it might make me a little sad....for a little bit probably. That said, Jamie has been banding for 12 seasons now and never shot one of his own banded birds.

nice bug suit, I have one just like it and it is great for warm weather outings.

I wore it bear hunting one time and it is a little un nerving watching them mosquitos trying to stand on their heads trying to bite you.

great pics of the ducks

Holy crap,,, I would have a heart attack if that red bandana wearing monster was holding me by the neck, heck at least the sound of the airboat might drown out Suttons quiet "inside voice"

Looks like a bunch of fun!!!!

Nightlighting is one of the funnest activities there is. I started nightlighting ringnecks around Gainesville, scaup on Tampa Bay, mallards and others in Colorado, and coots and canvasbacks here in Louisiana. looks like you had quite a few hens there, where most of the brrods fledged?

BTW, I have shot 2 birds that I banded...It's kinda cool, but I always release them wishing them the best and a long, productive life....felt bad about the long part..

Fred, I never figgered you skeeeeeerdy cat bwahahahahah ....where's your sense of adventure? Imagine the stories those ducks told when they got back together. Maaaan we WHIPPED his butt!!!!

It was a bunch of fun

Clint-

We also ran across a ringneck and several teal while we were out there but couldn't manage to get a hold of them. The teal could all fly, though we did get close.

Probably 2/3 of our 56 ducks were hens. Jamie said that that is not unusual since the drakes will molt first while the hens raise the ducklings. I honestly don't know if most of the broods were fledged. With the exception of the babies that we banded, that were clearly born there in that area, all the birds were a year or older. And the only broods we saw were the banded babies and the little fuzzies. I'm not sure if mottled ducks do the same thing, but last year Jamie said that the wood ducks would come to Goodwin to molt, so he doesn't often see freshly fledged wood ducks. Since I was taking down all the info and I could read all the info on the page, there were only, out of 100, 6 (including the five babies...BBWD and mottled duck... we banded) this year birds.

Pretty cool Dani. Long drive from Jacksonville but worth every minute for a chance like that. Did you have your GPS with you so you know how to get back to that spot? At least you'll know there are ducks there. Strange to me seeing little ones like that this time of year. Is it common to see hatches that late there?

Well that's pretty cool. When Jaimie's not looking, snag a band and email the number to me so I can report it, in January. : )

some of the info they have on black brant is crazy. I never thought i'd be a little sad to shoot a bird, but man when they know its life story and can tell you how many babies it had for the last 17 years and the fact that you killed it and its mate of the last 9 seasons, it tugs your heart strings a bit.

Cool, the continuing adventures of the Pirate and the Camo'ed Garden Gnome. ;)

hahahahahahah Mike, I kept trying to figure out how to get the fulvous neck bands off his wall....if I figger that out, i'll of course grab a mottled duck band for you while I'm at it

Don, Fred....you guys don't think that Steve has an inside voice? I'm shocked......

Ed, I know exactly where these ducks were...sadly I did not pull a permit for that spot. OHHHHH well....maybe I'll get lucky and can do a walk on.

Tim...we're having some great adventures this year that's for sure. Now if only the seas would lay down enough that I could handle going offshore so we could try to get some tarpon...
