A bluebill kind of day...

..or maybe just a day for shooting ducks with blue bills? (ok, maybe one with an orange bill too!) Got out to a favorite late season spot of mine today and found out that the ringers are in-that's usually a sign to me that we're in my favorite part of the season.

I was also really happy with my 10 month old pup-she performed like a champ, towards the end of shooting we had a crazy flurry of ducks flying around and ended up with 5 on the water at the end of legal shooting-she managed to pull off 5 blind retrieves, and even handled over to one against the far bank-couldn't be happier with her! My wife and older daughter came along for the afternoon, which was fantastic-it's so fun to hunt with family.

Once again I'm thankful for a great day, the season is going to be over way too soon! Hope all you guys with seasons still open have a great last few weeks!

Good morning, Cody~

Wow! What spectacular bag in spectacular country! Congratulations.

Your "bluebill" title reminded me of a tongue-in-cheek Duck ID "system" observed among hunters by a USFWS colleague of mine years ago.

There are only 3 kinds of ducks:

Greenheads - Mallard drakes - with maybe a shellpecker or 2 thrown in.....

Bluebills - Scaup, Redheads, Ringnecks, Ruddy, Wigeon, Pintail

Hen Mallards - everything else

All the best,

SJS

Beautiful. Love ringers, haven't had them in big numbers here in years.

Thank you guys! RL-for ringers I will usually age them for 8-10 days with the skin on, then skin and sear the breasts and legs. They come out great that way! I usually don't pluck divers, but I love to take some late season mallards and pluck them whole-we cook them in a dutch oven with some potatoes and a sweet chutney of some kind and they are fantastic.

Ha, that's a good one Steve. What's a shellpecker? Or do I really want to know?

Cody~

Shellpecker = Sheldrake = Merganser

For me, a Bull Shellpecker is a fully-plumed drake Common Merganser. I usually take one per season - IF he gives me the right "presentation". We only have 2 days left here upstate - so I'll be looking for him soon.

All the best,

SJS
