Rather than hog the donation thread, I thought I'd put some extra pictures here.

The concept for the frame came to me last winter, while I was running the snowblower. Ed Auman got permission to make me a copy of Steve Bretell's pattern, which I enlargened 20%:

I didn't change the head, but I took the basic body dimensions, and modified it:

Cut the frame out of cedar:

Now thats cool. Great work on that bird.

Question: What type of wire material did you use for the "ribs"?

Thanks guys!

In case you didn't see it in the sticky...this is my donation for the MLB/Lee Harker Auction.

Jim, thanks.

I use 9 gauge galvanized wire from the hardware store. I have used 12 gauge in the past, but found that the extra effort to shape the 9 gauge pays off in durability.

Chuck,

Good choice on the number 9 wire. Looks like you have got a good handle on your process for those canvas birds. I'm sure it will generate a lot of interest for the auction.

BTW. There is a project out in my garage right now, in various stages of completion, which I should be working on now instead of sitting in front of this computer. :>) :>) How would you prefer the handles to be personalized? (Chuck,, CJ,, ?????)

Thanks guys,

Mark, there are pictures of a couple different Old Squaw and Scoters in Archie Johnson's book, Canvas Decoys of North America. But I can't say that I have seen any other current day sea ducks made. That decoys is sweet!

Here is one Sutton and put together one weekend - it lasted acouple of hunts until my old man put it down.

Derek,

You should have made it self bailing. Unless I get carried away with lead, the top edge of my bottom board is at or slightly above the waterline.
