A few recent decoys

They are awesome John! But if you need some tips on painting don't be afraid to call, ok....................Kevin

Enjoyed seeing your work always on DCF, glad you made the move over here so we can all continue to enjoy it. Very nice birds as always.

John, great looking bills. I sure like the shading on that hen. Making hens a little on dark side seems to make for better contrast with the drakes on the water, and yours are perfect.

What is the size you make your magnum decoys?

Thanks. Mike

Thanks fellows for the nice comments. Kevin, I'll take all of the painting help I can get.

The bluebills are roughly 13 1/2" x 7 1/2".

The buffies are 12"x 6".

I'm glad to be done with all of the BS on DCF also.

Fantastic John!! Those Scaup are stunning.......I agree, the hen is breathtaking!! Keep posting your spectacular birds!

Alright John,

You are killing me!! I am looking at the back of the drake. How do you get the effect of the dark over the white??

Very nice.

Steve,

Pod Oil is a very special medium for oil paints that a good friend is hand making in very limited quantities. I only have a small amount and have doled it our carefully. I have been promised a good quantity at Westlake though. I'm going to post a picture later tonight or possibly tomorrow of a mallard drake that I did for a fellow from Maryland that I used it on also. It really mellows the paint. Makes it dark and mysterious.

Currently we are having another snow storm here in Pittsburgh and our roads are already nearly impassable. I just barely made it home from work. Trying to find the best way to get Mama Volleyduck home right now.

Spectacular John!

On the drake mallard's side pockets, as you move closer to the shoulder, it becomes darker. Did you glaze dark over light in that case? I am curious as to how you get that affect.

Thanks,
Steve

john if you were closer i'd be doing chores at your house for tidbits of knowledge. great birds! I can't say that i've developed my own style yet since i love little bits of everyone elses. One day maybe i'll be able to incorporate everyone into my work and then tweak it just a bit!
