Took Bill, my 11 year old lab on his first expedition of the year. He wated patiently in the blind as i poled around, setting 11 teal stiool for the morning's flight.
We were not disappointed, and for about a half hour, we were awed by singles and small groups stooling to the rig.. I never fired a shot. You may ask why.
Simple, the ducks that greeted us this morning were aix sponsa, not anas carolensis, BUT just being out there was like heaven for both of us.
He did get to make some retrieves because we had to stop at a fresh water pond on the way home to get the mud off, however, he still bears a wonderful herbal odor, i guess from the myriad fresh/brackish water vegetation on the place.
Gang, it isn't about the killing, it's about the company , fellowship, and being thankful for God's graces.

Easy on scientific names there George. I had to look them up to figure out what you were trying to say!

I often will do the same in the layout boat. I love to watch the birds work into the decoys. I usually get a call on the radio from the tender asking me what in the heck are you doing!

Duck hunting is a numbers sport

How many times you got out
How many old friends you spent time with and how many new ones you made
How many memories you created by watching the splendor that is nature

Im glad you had a good morning, i cant wait for duck season

George, that was a dandy! Glad you had so much fun!

It's not quite 4AM and I'm listening to the rain outside. The first thing through my mind was, "I wonder what it is like to hunt ducks in the rain?" Our early teal season opens in 2 hours and 20 minutes. It has been years since that has happened. Now I am wishing that I had some rain gear. Yes, and I'm thankful for this rain. Last week there was 1/2 cubic foot per second in the Rio Grande. I have no idea how that small amount can be measured and this morning it is running at 1,600 cubic feet per second---yesterday it approached 4,000 cfs.

By the way, don't you have any anas discors in your area?

apparently, we do, but it seems they are hanging out on big open areas, rather than the ditches. The only one we do not see is cyanoptera, but i can shoot them in Argentina.
