A good diver day.

This is from a week or so ago. The morning started off dead calm and then blew up as the sun rose. I love a good diver shoot.

You can't tell from the picture, but there is one of Grant's bbills out there, a pair from Sikorski, Lee Harker's ringer, a redhead from Mark Schupp, and a bunch that me and Mac made. The one swimming upside down is a hen canvasback that Mac made a few years ago.

Great shot. I hope you got into the divers on that day. Amazing to see how wide open things still are up there for this time of the year.

We're freezing up right now. Most of the little ponds are covered, but the big lakes will be open into November. I'm goint to head out today for a couple of days of shooting. I never know what to expect at this time of year. When I hunt the big lakes late like this the common thing is that ducks migrate along the lee shoreline of whatever lake, and if they are tired there's nothing you can do to stop them from piling into the spread. They are not even fussy about the species or location. But if they fly by, they aren't coming back for a second look, they are headed to BC.

What seems to affect the number of ducks around isn't necessarily the temp, but the drop in water levels. Once things stop melting in the daytime up high, our lakes drain out rather quickly so the vegetation that was submerged isn't anymore and the ducks just leave. Our levels have been really high this year.

Usually I can shore shoot for divers by the end of Sept but it wasn't until last weekend that the water had gone down enough for me to sit on a little point. I don't mind shooting from a boat but its usually a little more protected from the wind on shore, and then I can have a fire and move around a bit to keep warm. Its easier on the dog too.

Hope you get out lots this season Carl,

Mike

Sounds like you will be ice fishing before our season even opens!
Good luck & be safe.
