A great captain...

Some photos from some recent layout gunning with our captain, Dave Ludington on the left. I just want to say, there is great comfort when you have a competent captain in the boat. It gives the rest of us gunners great confidence under difficult circumstances on the big water.

A great captain makes it look simple and easy. It's the little things he does and makes it look effortlessly yet, he is always focused on the task of keeping his gunners safe. Dave Ludington is all of that. I just want him to know how much we appreciate his leadership and skill in the boat. God blessed us with a great captain and, we thank Him for Dave...

I was also blessed with a lesser scaup with a band...

I will concur Pat. I will ever be thankful for Dave's skill at the tiller last year. You are blessed to have him on such a regular basis. AND......his commentary on the birds is priceless.

What part of the world were you hunting, Pat? Congrats on that wide variety of ducks that you shot along with that banded scaup. I wonder where it was banded and how long ago?

Thank you for the compliment Pat....but what Pat did not tell everyone else is that he was acting as first mate by deploying the layout, all the long lines and rotating our guests in and out of the box safely. It is a team effort and the team is only as strong (or safe) as its weakest link....the Lord blessed us with solid links and great gunning that day!

When everyone involved knows what is going on, expected of them and is confident in one an-others abilities it makes the whole experience look easy to an on-looker seeing it for the first time....and it is due to Pat for introducing me to layout gunning, Jim Williams and Tim Speight for teaching me their method of setting a rig (a method I use today).

So I say thank you to those three gentlemen!

Dave being a competent captain you just have to keep the crew safe and yell orders at the appropriate time. Ha

Mike - I hope not. Looks like this weekend will warm things up a bit. We have 4 inches of ice at our duck club. Unprecedented for this time of year.

Have you been able to get out? I hope so...

I trust you and your family are well. God bless! Pat

Pat,
Tonight should tell the tale, if we get some wind we should be ok.
the scaup may leave if they get too much ice but the cans should stay and the goldeneye should be thick.

I made it out last Friday and the canvasback were very cooperative.
Stop by if you see us out next week

mike.
