A question for those running 4 stroke motors....

How do you guys like the 4 strokes in cold weather? Is there anything out of the ordinary you need to do before running in cold weather? Are there any oil viscosity or lubrication issues to worry about?

Thanks,

Ed L.

Yep, I'm running a 60hp 4 stroke on my new fishing boat. Dealer and books says running the synthetic oils is ok for both lower and upper ambient temps. If running regular type oils, I need to change between hot summer and cooler weather. I don't remember just what the temps and viscosity numbers are off the top of my head, but I can check if you need me to.

Dave,

I don't know anything about these motors yet but if the synthetic oil works in all temp ranges that would seem the way to go. I'm looking at a 15 hp 4 stroke Suzuki with electric start. I like that part!

Thanks,

Ed

The early carbeurated (sp?) Mercs can be a pain to start in cold weather if your thinking of buying used. The injected models start a whole lot easier.

Ed,

my Honda 20hp uses synthetic oil. i've had no problems starting in cold weather, but then again it doesn't get that cold here in northern Va. it's garage kept until the night before i hunt.

Ed, the 9.9 I sold to Scott O. was run in January here in Michigan..and it was frickin cold! It started right up and ran like a champ with regular 10w-30. I think good gas is important at that time of year too. I just changed the oil on my 25 Honda with synthetic and the lower unit too..I waited till I had some hours on it before I switched from regular oil because I had heard the synthetics won't let parts seat..probably a myth but what the hell. My 25 seems to run smoother with the new oil in the crank and lower unit. Make sure you get the "Marine" synthetic when you make the switch and lower your motor after pulling out in cold weather.

but I was to slow. Called him this morning to make an offer only to find out he sold it last night!!

What do they say...Ya snooze ya loose!!

Been running Mobil 1 in my 9.9 Honda 4 stroke since the first oil change. Runs fine in the cold though I have found that if it gets down into the teens I need to keep the choke on a little longer.
