A rant for your enjoyment....

Tod, I'll third the suggestion on the whites I have a pair of the logger boots with a vibram sole , a pair of "REAL" logger boots with corks from my olden days of hunting elk in the heavy timber of the cascades "(great for running down downed trees) and third a pair of their lace up packer boots that I ride in during the summer, they are all great boots.

Also I would suggest the Kennetrek boots from Montana, they make a lighter summer weight boot, I have a pair of the mountain extreme boots and they are fantastic!!The Kennetrek's are all made in Italy.

I bought a pair of the new Under Armour speed freak boots at cabelas, they are going back , nothing but a bunch of cheap China garbage, wore them 8 times and the toes are peeling apart.

BTW I never thought you were an asshole, Good luck on the boot quest

I was there this summer. After years of name brands boots that never fit, I bit the bullet myself. My boots were to arrive in Oct and I recieved them in Nov. When I tried them on I noticed the footbeds had different pressure points on bottom of each foot. I felt more of an arch in the right foot, and the boots with twopair thick socks were very roomy. I called and they told to wear them for a bit, then decide if I wanted to send them back. After my trip to KS thanksgiving trip I did. I recieved them in mid feb and the KS dirt was stil on them, but they fit much better. With so much snow I haven't been able to wear them much to find out how well the fit, but I don't notice the difference in footbeds and they are tighter fitting. Whats discouraging is my buddy bought a pair off ebay, unkown size and they fit me like a dream. I need to spend a bit more time with these, but if there are any problems I know they will fix it.

Good to hear your experiance was better Bill. How was the quality of the finish on yours? The first pair was bad, the edges of the soles were ground very roughly with the long strings of ground rubber hanging off of them and the stitching seemed rough. This second pair at least looks better.

Thanks Fred for the 3rd! When I was looking a couple years back I contacted Gary and he told me just who to talk to at White's. The issue is - that I'm bothered by plantar fasciitis flare ups and boots with stiff soles can be a problem with that. All of the White's have extremely stiff soles given their work/logging boot pedigree. What always feels good are the sneakery boot hybrids with the molded foam soles, but I would like to get away from throw away stuff. I'm going to have to look at quality hikers as you suggest.

Per Russel, I'm going to wear them over the weekend and send them back next week. They will cover shipping.

Here's one you never thought of. I too was looking for a pair of boots that met all my requirements. So happened that I had a pair of Keen Moc's that had some issues with the heel. They were under warranty and I wanted to get them fixed or replaced. Too make a long story short, they couldn't do either so I was told to order whatever I wanted out of their catalog and they would send them to me. I orderd their insulated hiking boot and OMG these things are amazing. Absolute best pair of boots I've ever owned. Turned a couple of buddies onto them and the love them as well. Anyway....

I wouldn't give these guys another chance. It has been how long and you still don't have the boots you ordered. How long of a turn around would it take if something went wrong with these boots during hunting season? How much confidence would you have that you would get those boots back and they would be fixed and fixed the way you wanted? I'd say you already know the answer.

For what it is worth.

I fear you won't find a boot, even a custom boot like Russell, that will handle your plantar fascitis.

What would an ahole pay for a pair of boots like that? In corresponding with some Africa hunters sporting $50K custom rifles, I asked what boots they were wearing. Suprisingly they were wearing sub $100 Orvis Paladium french foreign legion. suppose to be amazing boots, but kinda look like converse chuck Taylor's. Just prior to me ordering a pair, Orvis stripped them from the website. I have some danners, and then another pair of mid-level hiking boots that i bought at a friend's suggestion (he backpacks a lot). The thing that struck me was how many hiking boot options are out there, how high tech the materials are that they use, and how cheapl a quality pair can be had. I think i'll probably stick with hiking boots, except when i need rubber boots and/or snake protection.

I know there are different options out there. I'm looking for function, fit and look is important. I could hunt most areas for upland in tennis shoes, but I choose not to. I was looking for the perfect pair of boots and a lifetime relationship with the manufacturer.

I'm good on managing it and usually don't have any problems. Boots are just a part of the package. The boots I use most now are mostly fine and have similar soles to what I wanted on the Russels, I just don't want what I'd call a stiff sole.

The Russels are supposed to be big with the Africa crowd too. I have never found anyone to say anything bad about them - I'm lucky that way. Russel makes some sweet snake boots you might want to give them a try :).

As for prices, look them up yourself when you order a pair.

i do have a pair of Le Chameau that i pulled off a clearance sale one time. I felt like an a-hole even at half price. That was the year i went to college, 1999. They are still going strong, and are the most comfortable rubber boot i can imagine, by far. So some things are worth the extra price.

I figured they wouldn't list prices, they do. To paraphrase Chevy Chase, I think i need some dam bait to go with them dam boots. Whoa, I wonder why he doesn't take pictures of the oz of gold he gives you with the boots.

I have been putting in for alligator tags for a few years now, and when i get my lizard, this guy is building me a pair of boots. http://houstoncustomboots.com/hunting_boots. For an ahole looking for custom, you can have him make you a pair that no one else has.

Tod, The Kennetrek's also have a pretty hard sole, a must out here as most of the time in my area it is sharp basalt your walking on and soft soled boots just don't work when you can feel every rock your stepping on.

Rose and I did about 7 miles up behind the house yesterday and the Kennetreks worked well again, after the junk under armors go back to Cabelas I'm going to buy a pair of the summer hikers from Kennetrek.

Also the Crispi brand boots are getting some good reviews, I might try them if I can find a retailer in the area.

Good luck

Fred

finish was fine on mine, soon as we loose all this snow I will start wearing them more and see what I think. If there are problems I might stop in next time I am at my dads.

When I was searching and talking with people I never heard a bad thing and they have many avid supporters out there. If I had normal size feet I would have opted for a commercial brand, there are many out there. But Russell custom makes boots to your feet and I don't think that is an easy process. The issues I had were taken care with a smile and were very easy to deal with. This a mom/pa company and I am sure like any small town they have issues with quality employees and will give them the benefit these are isolated incidents. My boots are very high quality, its get getting them to fit just the way I want them to and its ok in my book they didn't get it right the first try.
