A simple canoe rehab

Tom~

Glad you are enjoying the journey. You reminded me that I need to weigh her in the "after" mode.

Stay tuned,

SJS

Good morning, All~

This vessel is done for now - although I am still waiting for her custom bottom paint to arrive in the mail.

I made a pair of low horses to store her outside - and especially in the woods during the gunning season.

They are strong enough - but I did not add the knees that would make them stiff enough for hard work.

I bored the holes in each end so I can use a length of quarter-inch line to lash the canoe down when stored.

I rot-proofed the feet then painted with Parker's Marsh Grass.

I weighed her in her AFTER mode. With the aluminum rails and plastic end caps replaced with Mahogany rails and decks (and hood ornament) and all new paint, she gained 2 pounds overall.

The hood ornament and hull are Pettit Dull Dead Grass; interior, rails and decks are Parker's Marsh Grass.

All done!

I still need to put 2 coats on her bottom. She will have to wait a couple of months, though, before her "sea trials" and final portraits are possible. It was 10 below over the weekend and still single digits today. Ice-out will be awhile....

(And, I've already got another vessel in the shop.)

All the best,

SJS

Classy rehab on your canoe. Need to find a 14" myself and go thru the duck boat conversion process. Picked up an old aluminum Smokercraft about 3 years ago at 17' and went thru the process. Its just a little big for what I intended its use for. Great for 2 people , just a little big for 1, decoys and a dog. Thats a very good weight for your 15' canoe

Good morning, Roy~

Glad you enjoyed! I hope you can find a good candidate.

From my days of canoe gathering, I have 3 more in the "marina" here that need varying levels of attention. Two are very similar to the Indian River and will get similar rehabs. The third, though, has a nice flat bottom without a keel. If its 'glass is still sound - I need to inspect and test it more thoroughly - I will likely deck it over with a long cockpit. That would enable me to both use it for transport - with a second gunner - AND hunt right from it with a good hide - basically a longer version of my 13-foot SWEET GHERKIN:

GHERKIN is a fine vessel - but it does have a keel and I overbuilt the floor. I could make one quite a bit lighter nowadays.

Too many boats, too little time......

All the best,
