AHM Report is Out!

Short sweet of it:
Liberal Framework for all 4 Flyways.
Pintails: Liberal Framework, 2 bird/day bag limit for full season
Scaup: Moderate Framework, 2 bird/day bag limit for full season (3/day) in Pacific.

Carl, that is great news. I know it is old hat, but when you have been raised on shooting only 4 ducks then see it drop to the point system, it is really hard to imagine what good luck we have had for some time now.

Do they only focus on Mallards, Blacks, Pintails and Scaup? What about the other ducks like Cans & GE? Rumor has it that Cans will be two this year and those of us who target GE have wondered for several years how the population is doing and if we will see a bag reduction. Any info or did I totally miss that section in the report?

According to the tentative regulations for the New York DEC, it is 2 cans per day (and 15 Canadas per day in September).

It did not mention cans or GE. I don't believe there is a an establish model and framework for either, so they are "outside" of AHM. That's not to say they will be "in" as models and frameworks are developed. I believe we will see the same thing for redheads soon.

I did not hear about the possibility of 2 Cans.
I haven't had to many times when I could have killed two in one day. But it would be nice to be able to if I get the chance.
A guess of new "Diver Slam" in our area would be 2 cans, 2 redheads and 2 scaup.

Yep, the good old days are now!
We've been on a consistent run of good duck production despite our impacts to the breeding habitat, shows how resilient waterfowl can be despite humans in the landscape.
And with the arctic getting warmer, you have to wonder if ducks will begin to nest farther north where we aren't messing with the habitat so much???

Interesting thought. To expand on that with Canada's increasing food production and the warmer weather hopefully instinct will still dictate a need to migrate.

Ducks already seek wetter areas when there are dry spots in their "home" nesting area.
And birds are known to naturally "explore" new areas.
I think we will see some species gradually expand north.
But only time will tell.

From my contacts around the DNR world:
Canvasbacks will increase to 2, pintails will stay at 2, scaup will reduce to the moderate package but there are slight modifications in the Mississippi and Central Flyways.
In the Mississippi Flyway that will mean a scaup 60 day/3 bird bag. (Not sure about the other flyways, my guys didn't say)

The only other significant change is that the daily bag limit on snow geese in the regular season in the Central Flyway will go from 20-50. There are some other minor tweaks, but this encompasses the major changes.
(Oh, and no info on the persistent rumor of a redhead limit increase)

I was thinking what it would be like to haul out 50 geese after a morning shoot. This could bring a whole new meaning to what "Tuckered Out" means for a retriever.

The best quotes in "Happy, Happy, Happy". I do believe, are the ones about waterfowl regulations in chapter 11 - REDNECK CAVIAR. The man hits the nail right on the head, and makes perfect sense. Ya we have lots of ducks, and less hunters. I wonder why?

Central flyway...For light geese, all states would be able to select a 107-day season with a daily bag limit of 50....

Wow, luck into to one of those cold, cloudy, windy days in the right spot in TX and you could have a PILE of snow geese to clean. If you bring enough shells and maybe a spare barrel.

Mississippi Flyway (Alabama, Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, Tennessee, and Wisconsin):
  • Ducks: Not more than 60 days between September 21, 2013, and January 26, 2014. The proposed daily bag limit is 6 and may include no more than 4 mallards (2 hens), 3 wood ducks, 2 pintails, 1 mottled duck, 1 black duck, 2 canvasbacks, 2 redheads, and 3 scaup.
  • Merganser: The proposed daily bag limit of mergansers is 5, only 2 of which may be hooded mergansers. In states that include mergansers in the duck bag limit, the daily limit is the same as the duck bag limit, only 2 which may be hooded mergansers.
  • Canada Geese: Generally, seasons for Canada goose would be held between September 21, 2013, and January 31, 2014, and vary in length among states and areas.
  • Light Geese: States would be able to select seasons for light geese not to exceed 107 days with 20 geese daily between September 21, 2013, and March 10, 2014;
  • White-fronted Geese: the proposed season would not exceed 74 days with a 2-bird daily bag limit or 88 days with a 1-bird daily bag limit between September 21, 2013, and February 16, 2014;.
  • Brant: not to exceed 70 days with a 2-bird daily bag limit or 107 days with a 1 bird daily bag limit between September 21, 2013, and January 31, 2013.
