NDR Does anyone here use any of the air rifles? Which one would you recomend and spring opperated or air?Not hunting big game, just small stuff and plinking. .177 or .22 cal.???? Thanks
 
I got a gamo 1200fps. Good enough for what I use it on. Mostly squirrels. Mine will only shoot the lead ammo accurately. The gold PBA ammo was all over the place on target paper. Not bad for 130$. Mine is 177
 
This nitro-piston models are much smoother shooting than most cheap spring guns. Look at Air Guns of Arizona or PyramydAir.com on the net. Awesome selection of quality air rifles. Do not buy a Walfart cheap gun because you'll never hit a bird with it. The Benjamin Trail NP is about $300. Or the Titan is a good starter for $150. Also, buy an assortment of pellets. All air guns are picky about the ammo they like. One brand will produce 2" groups at 25 yards and another brand will give you 1/2" groups. Every gun usually takes several hundred shots to break in. Its just that way. What ever you buy, make sure the company has a good warranty and a solid reputation. Avoid "made in china" in you can. Have fun!
 
I've used a RWS mdl. 34 in .177 for many years. It's very accurate and I've taken crows, opossum, and red squirrel with it. I would recommend this gun to anyone getting started with shooting air guns.
 
for simple garden defense the Gamo in .17 has been a fine weapon for me. Once I got it dialed in and shot it a lot it is very deadly within 40 yards.
 
Benjamin 392 . 22 Caliber Carbine Air Rifle with a scope not the fastest out there but deadly accurate & packs a punch! I have had mine for 15+ years never had an issue!!

I have the same gun and take squirrels at the top of trees all day long.
 
With the current state of affairs regarding .22 rimfire ammo, those .177 cal pellets are looking better and better. Wonder how long before these too will become scarce?
 
...i got a feinwerkbau 300...an old olympic 10 m target rifle...it will literally stack pellets on top of one another...i got it to train for smallbore competition...i've heard benchrest shooters claim that match air rifles are the most accurate rifles made & i think they're right ...back in the day writers said to get a .22 to train for centerfire shooting;today i think one would be well served to train with an air rifle instead...accurate,no recoil,cheap,also good for aerial shooting ...too many pluses to list...and fun to boot!!!
 
...with regards to spring piston air guns,less is more...
fast air guns have some funky push-pull reverse recoil thing that can make them difficult to put pellets on the mark...youth model air guns go 800 fps or less(plenty fast enough, about the same speed as# 4 lead shot @ 40 yards)...are easier to shoot accurately... are pretty economical ...man! advantages are there!!! i do, however, prefer fixed barrel guns,sidecockers & underlevers...cant have too many airguns!!!
