Already?!? 6 month old

Sometimes it feels like just yesterday I was picking out a pup and then others it seems like ages ago. It's been a strange up and down year (mostly down). I'm glad to have Deuce around.

He's grown some since his first attempt at getting up on the rock.

The best I could measure him he is now 22 1/2 inches at the shoulder and probably in the low to maybe mid 40s for weight. He is starting to build up those shoulder muscles and even though you don't see ribs he has very little fat. His coat and color seems to make him look a little chunky. I think he is about on pace for being around a 60lb dog like I had hoped for.

On warm days he likes to just lay down in the clover. (I have pretty much given up hope for any beard growth. That's fine, he has that nice dense coat.)

Although this is probably a more accurate picture of what his life is like when it is hot out.

He really is becoming a very good house dog... other then the fascination he has with any of my footwear. He still has unexplained bouts of what I believe is "puppy deafness". He seems to not even notice I am there for minutes at a time. Then it passes and he is back to listening like a perfect gentleman. :)

Over the 4th he hung around one of his doggy cousins. She may only be 15lbs but she ruled the roost and put him in his place. That's alright with me, I'm just glad he gets along with and respects dogs of all shapes and sizes.

I just haven't had the time to get him on planted birds. I feel like crap about that. He is a much much better dog then I have been a trainer. In a few more weeks I can run him on wild birds so hopefully there are a few left around here after the floods. He has such a strong pointing instinct I don't think it will take much to build it up.

He is doing great at retrieving and he loves the water. He is getting better at swimming every time we go.
We do have one strange thing that pops up when I throw the bumper in shallow water. I think he loses sight of it for a moment when he is running through the water and it surprises him when he gets up on it. This video shows pretty well what happens. Click for video He doesn't do that when it is in deeper water and he is swimming... at least he is smart enough not to point then. hahaha

I guess I know he isn't too bad of a dog because I already miss having that little puppy around. Puppy teeth I don't yet miss but the little bundle full of energy and poop I do. :)

Tim, Deuce is becoming a fine looking pointer. I'm sure his natural instinct will surprise you once you get him in the field. Good Luck and Keep it up. Jeff

Tim, that is hard to believe that it has already been 6 months since you picked out Deuce. That is one impressive dog. I like the way he looks and his coloring is fantastic. Look out pheasants and ducks. This dog looks like he is ready to go.

he is looking real good, Tim. That little "odd" behavior..... sign of a strong pointing dog. It looks like he is on track to me, just have fun with him this fall. Then training begins after hunting season.

Wow Tim, very handsome. Just think of all the fun this fall! First skunk! First Porkie! :).

I hope that you can find some birds to put him on (and that you take some pics and share them)! What fun! Good luck.

He is a good looking dog. He would be a great chick magnet for a 12 year old boy. I feel like a perv going for a walk with him. Every preteen girl wants to pet him. I suppose it's the bearded ones that attract the older gals.

Tod I'm staying away from porkie territory this fall. Skunks...well we can hope for the best. :)
So far he isn't too fur crazy for being a wirehair.

He has already been on some wild birds, if you count baby robins, grackles and sparrows. Its amazing how blind they are too a dog and how quick he can be. No pointing needed when they fly right at his head.

Tim

porkies skunks coons, he is probably in the poop and nasty decomposed critter stage right now. yes the beard ones attract the older girls, they are dogs that have hit puberty. :-)

Bill you never mentioned the beard thing to me...must not want the wirehair guys to get all that important drahthaar knowledge.

Speaking of decomposing things Deuce brought back a magget infested little bundle of feathers this evening. He was carefully holding it by a wing but had to bring it right to my hand. Best retrieve he's made on a bird.

Tim

Tim, it's amazing how quickly time is flying. Deuce is a very handsome fella. I look forward to seeing pictures of him this hunting season.

Nice garden you've got there too.

Dani

Tim he is a hansom looking dog. I laughed out loud at the rotten bird part of the post. At least he brought his prize right to you!

Thanks Dani. Unfortunately that part of the garden is my aunt's. I strategically placed him where you wouldn't be able to see all of my weeds. :)

Brandon,
I would have taken a photo but it was about dark and I didn't know what it was until he was about 10 feet away. Yep he just keeps delivering pleasant surprises.

Tim

Right good looking pup for an UGLY DOG.....clearly the little hairy bitch, (she does look sort of like Marlene Dietrich only prettier), has more scary German in her than your pup.....
Look forward to seeing pictures of him with some feathers in his mouth.....

Steve

Steve she is a proper english lady like Greer Garson. Her stoic beauty will conquer that brutal aryan dog.
I'm going to have to get another one so ugly that peoples attention is drawn away from Deuce. He has been called "pretty" far too many times.

Tim

What a good looking dog. It has been my experience that good dogs almost train themselves when you're too busy or depressed (or both) to go through all the stations of the cross. He just looks brainy. Good luck and I hope the flood left you some birds for him to find.
