American Water Spaniel

Well Rick, your post with pics of River would be enough to have everyone wanting a AWS.She looks great.Has that look ,"like this is what I did today, check out
all these big geese I retrieved".Ken ,post the pics of the pup as soon as you can.
Rick,is that BBSB a Dave Clark Estuary?Looks like his decoy rack configuration.

HI Joe
Yes Its a David Clark Boat. I can't say enough about it. It is one of the best purchases I have made in Yrs. David is a real craftsman.

Gary,
You stole my plan. AWS and the David Clark sneakbox. River is exactly what I'm looking for. The pictures are great. I just sent them to my wife. I started reading up on the AWS and also a book on training spaniels by James Spencer. I'm probably 6 to 8 months from getting a pup but boy will I be ready. If you don't mind, I think a picture of River will become my new wallpaper. Thank you very much for your input. You just confirmed I'm doing the right thing.
Joe, I hope to see one of Davids boats at Tuckerton also.

Ken,

Just my 2 cents and a clarification. One thing to remember is that River is a nice looking and fine working AWS, but she is almost 2X as big as a typical AWS bitch. Big AWS are not the norm for most of the breed or breeding programs. Don't expect every AWS to be that large...they aren't. Just want to get you back to reality here just in case.

BTW - Spencer's book is a great read. The AWSFA had Jim out for a full weekend training seminar, 1/2 day class, 1/2 day field/water in Michigan back in 1998. It was a great time.

Thanks Nick for the reality check. I wasn't really thinking size but more the look. She is a great looking AWS with a real sparkle in her eye.

I also hunt with an AWS. Belle is gonna be 4 this fall, and like the above fellow said, I will never be without an AWS. She is the smartest dog I have ever owned. (I've owned setters and beagles too.. so that isn't saying much!) There must be something about AWS owners - I too admire the Clark boats and hunt with an O/U. I hunt from a canoe and a Grumman Sport Boat, and she's a perfect dog for those small craft. She weighs about 35 lbs. She was bred by the same breeder that Nick is getting a pup from, Wine Country. They are great breeders and very helpful to the new AWS owner. I also hunt upland with Belle, and that is where she really shines. Nothing makes her happier than hunting partridge. I wish I could hit them! Let us know how you make out! Alec

Thanks for your input and pics Alec. Belle is a fine looking pup.You guys are killing me with the pics but don't stop.
I can't wait till it's my turn!!

Spoke with a reputable breeder today. We talked for about 45 minutes. I think I'll be getting my pup from the next litter which should be February/March time frame. That should put my pup here around May/June. He has 2 males available now but I think I want to wait and be more prepared. Can't come soon enough.

One of the breeders I've spoken with put me in touch with an owner near my home. My wife and I went to see his pup last night. He has a 4 year old male from Little Brownies Kennel. The dog spends all day with him in a boat on the bay as he is a commercial clammer. What a great dog. Very friendly, never barked and well behaved. Now my wife is onboard with my AWS quest. When we got home last night she picked up one of my AWS books and started reading. Now I need to figure out the difference between an $800 dog, a $1000 dog and a $1200 dog.
