An unusual hunt

Hey Steve. Just want you to know that I, for one, would be interested in that barred owl story. That sounds great if it was a retrieve. As a kid always jump shooting ducks in the PPR and with no dog, I learned to use landmarks. Whether it be a tree, some brush, or lined up with a farmer's silo in the distance, they all helped me find downed ducks.

I just wanted you to know that you got a darn good laugh out of me on that one, Doug! Good to hear from you. Hope those pups are doing just fine.

Our Amber is due on Dec 19th, her puppys will be ready to go on valentines day LOL.

Good morning, Al~

I am going to hold you in suspense on the "retrieving owl" tale.....

I have contemplated a full-length "short story" about a whole bunch of memorable retrieves. I was going to say "human retrieves" - but I can think of at a few that involved animals other than dogs. The big problem is trying to imagine when I will find the time for serious writing....

All the best,

SJS

That was some good advice, Andrew. Down here I lost the only blue wing teal I shot one morning during our early teal season. Chili and I had gone for a walk to see if we could jump some teal but never saw any. When we got back my teal was gone. Later on my way home I was stopped by federal agents to check my gun, bag limit etc. I told them about the bird and they both started to laugh. They had driven past my spot where my decoys were and the duck. Just before getting there they spotted a coyote with a duck in its mouth dashing across the road. He was the culprit!

That's the first I've heard of a coyote nab! Pretty funny.

Hmmmm, your Amber's pups will go home at 8 weeks on Valentine's Day, that is cool. Guess what? If all goes according to what we witnessed Chip and Serrano's pups will be 7 weeks old on that weekend. I'll keep you posted.

Steve, you can do it. There has to be someone at MIT that has figured out how to get 25 hours out of a 24 hour day.
I'll wait, gladly!

Hi Dani. I surely must agree with you. That was beyond a stroke of luck to have it fall like that in the one open spot. By the way that happened to Darren when he came out to hunt with me back in 2007 I believe. We were hunting the Rio Grande when he shot a drake widgeon. It flew off towards where we parked the truck which was a good 1/4 of a mile from us. We saw it crumple in mid air and crash. At that time I had Chili and as we walked back to go home Chili found it in the middle of the trail we were walking on. That seemed unbelievable for the terrain that we were in. It did happen.

Dave, I would say that Coyote was pretty brazen. But he must have had a good brunch with that freshly killed teal. Glad to know that I had two wardens who witnessed it. At first I thought my hunting buddy, Chili, was losing her sense of smell.
