And so it begins

Tomorrow starts the duck season in FL. They're calling for 4-8 ft seas here this weekend on the gulf so I won't be going out on the gulf. I've done a bit of driving around and scouting different boat ramps and what I'm seeing so far isn't encouraging, but there are still other places to look. I'll go somewhere but for the first time I think ever, I've got an opening day where when I'm asked where you going, my answer is NO CLUE.

Ah well...good luck to all who head out this weekend.....

I'm going to a Wedding my Wife is a Bridesmaid in, ruling out both Saturday and Sunday for me. By comparison, "no clue" isn't so bad...

I remember the first opening day when I moved to where I am now. I had no clue so just drove around seeing which boat landings were being used and where the most shooting was taking place. It was a blue bird day anyway but still watching others going to their spots wasn't much fun.

So, the open waters of the Gulf will be wind-whipped and rough. Sounds like a good wind for forcing birds into any protected pocket water along the coast on inland waterways or lakes close to the coast. This blow that is rocking the upper Midwest should move birds out of the Canada and the Dakotas. Do you have any good acorn production this year for wood ducks?

Good luck to you Dani. We came back across the Mississippi River today quartering a 32 mile an hour wind. We fought 3 and 4 foot rollers. Thank goodness it was 60 degrees because we were drenched by the time we got across to the ramp. Won't be doing that tomorrow. 34 mile an hour winds and Temps in the 20. One of are party got a nice deer today so it wasn't in vane.

Don't know about Dani's part of the Gulf coast but over here we having a bumper crop of acorns. But with the drought upriver, the hardwood bottoms are all dry outside the creek channels. While That will concentrate the woodies for the folks who hunt them, it's really not good thing for the swamp or the birds that over winter up in the swamps.

Dani, I hope things work out for you. Sunday should be calmer.
On the bright side, this strong front should push a bunch of ducks down.

Good luck Dani...We're a month into out season and I'm still trying to figure out where to go for birds. I did see some rafted up today though. I may have to take the sneakboat out on Monday and see what happens. Have a great season!

Please tell they at least have open bar at the reception to console you.

Good luck Dani! My friend in Tally said he's gonna give it a go on one of the local lakes. I'm praying for him.

Hey Dani. Best of luck to you when you find that spot you want to be in.

I went out for the first time in Nov. last Wednesday and we ended up having sustained winds of +30mph. It was no fun and didn't see one duck on the Rio Grande. I should say that I didn't get out to my spot until 10:30AM.

Thanks y'all.

If the woods are as filled with acorns as my neighbors trees are, then we've had a helluva acorn season this year. There should be very happy turkeys, wood ducks and deer.

Saturday I went out to a pond near the Gulf thinking that the ducks might want to find some refuge. Saturday dawned, still, calm, not a hint of a breeze, glassy water and foggy. (I tell ya, the weather liars sure know how to screw up plans.) Some years this area is very good and filled with food. Other years, not so much. Especially when at the beginning of September a hurricane blows in and inundates the area with salt water and kills off any food that might've been there. I saw 4 wood ducks and that was about it. A little later in the morning, I was hearing something behind me so I stood up in the spartina to look. And there was a pretty little 4pt buck chilling out and wandering through the woods/marsh. Feeding and scratching and rubbing and just being totally unconcerned about me. At one point he was no more than 30 ft from me, broadside. If I'd had my blaze orange with me then my duck hunt would've ended a little differently. Alas I did not have it with me so he continued on unmolested, after chilling out with me for about 10 minutes. I called it a day shortly after the fog burned off and the day got even more still, if that was possible. I went home, took a nap and woke up to much windier conditions as the front had blown through while I slept. Go figure.

Since I had no real good spots to go to and the temps over night were supposed to get into the 30s, I decided that for Sunday I would burrow down into my blankets and sleep in. So I did. It was very windy this morning and afternoon too. I woke up nice and toasty warm, listening to one of my dogs talking to me about wanting to go out front (he loves cold weather). Eventually I gave in, got up, made some hot chocolate and went and sat on the front porch and watched him be a goofball in the cold weather. Then I slowly began getting the mudboat loaded up to go explore one of the lakes here that I'd never been on. I wasn't expecting much there either. I'd seen some woodducks when I checked different landings, but not many. I unloaded the boat into a stiff north wind and headed off across the lake to the less windy side, finding submerged stumps that startled the hell out of Drake and me when we zipped over them. Luckily we never got stuck. There are some pretty places back there on the lake, though I didn't flush many woodducks. There were surprisingly few, but maybe they were just hunkered down real tight. I found one spot with a ringneck that really wanted to hang out in that spot, so after flushing him, Drake and I sat in some grass in the boat and waited to see if he'd come back. Sure enough he did. It was a gorgeous afternoon on a beautiful lake and I was happy that Drake got to go on more than just a boat ride.

Without a doubt, this was the slowest opener I've had but it was a neat one with the deer that came to visit me.

Three years ago I had a deer swim across the channel almost in my lap. Had to keep Booker in hand but the doe wasn't the least bit concerned. That day I only saw and shot one duck too. Shooting ducks is not the only reason we do this.

Dani,

Sleeping in while the front moves in,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, can't say as I've ever done that. I think the duck gods granted you that ring neck, out of pity for Drake. :>) :>)

When did you get the flat bottom? What are you running for a motor? Do you have a blind on it or do you just use the flat bottom for transportation?

Hey, if the duck gods took pity on Drake then I'm a happy girl cuz he sure was a happy boy.

It's not my boat. It's Steve's. The one he bought from Jason Russell a few years back. It's got a 23? hp Mudbuddy on it. I'm babysitting it for him.....something about needing to make room at his place for a camper and not having enough space for all of his current boats and vehicles. So I get to babysit it and take it out exploring. When we hunt from it, we generally just use palm fronds for a blind. No shortage of those in FL :)

I have hunted out of that old boat a few times and slid over a few stumps and logs with Jason. It has good mojo so you have that going for you.
