Another decoy idea like Derek's.

We have fronds, cork, cedar, foam and canvas deeks. Before we know it someone here on the site is going to post up some authentic-Lovelock cave blocks they have whipped out of tules. Neat idea with the seaweed – kind of has a Green-LEED certified slant to it. If you tell me the wood was salvage driftwood it get s a platinum rank.

You seen this contraption before? I've never seen it in use, but it looks interesting.

Makes you wonder if there are any original ideas out there. Seems like its all been done. I once made decoys out of fence boards cut to a tear drop shape with my dad's chainsaw, with real wings stapled on and real heads in a spike. I never got a chance to try them as I set them out one evening and when I went back in the morning, something had eaten the heads off. I bet they would have worked though.

Mike, I believe that is designed to use your shot ducks/geese as additional decoys. Goose hunting we usually lay out our kills as sleeping birds within the decoys too. Dave
 
I've often thought that a simple T-shaped decoy would work--like Derek's basic frame but without the canvas and foam. About the only way a duck would note the difference would be sitting on the water--from every other direction a "body" would be visible.

I may try some next year. And I will definitely be doing some of the foam-bodies as I need to build a scoter flock...
 
Those old Decoys are great. I'm heading out after work tonight and if it gets slow, i'll see if I can't "Whip Up" one of those Tule Blocks for you Derek. Especially since i'll be hunting about an hour away from the Lovelock Caves! We've made them before during the real slow times hunting. They are not as easy as they look and take a lot of time to get them to look like something resembling the shape of a duck.

I grew up using those types of blocks. For huge spreads they work great as filler. I would prefer that style (like a "t") to the speaders and silos that many use. If I remember I will take some pics of some deeks I made back in my teens.
