Another End to a Wisconsin Season

You took the words right out of my mouth.
With the state and federal employment outlook right now, I would go to grad school.
It will give you an edge once the agencies start hiring and its an even bigger plus with private firms.

Carl, I'm sure we are driving them crazy, but it needed said :). I'm done unless I'm specifically asked, until the 2nd of January.

i hear ya about just going, but i really want to save up a good amount of money so i dont have a massive morgage when i get out there. i also have to wait for the gf to graduate, she will be done next december and then a year of post grad for her RN requirments.

i am still doing research on the balance of things i love to do and life considerations; bass fishing, duck hunting (gotta love the 107 days in the pacific flyway), big river systems, maybe the ocean, cheap land, low taxes, no stupid laws

so definetly not staying in ct

i am thinking about the washington side of the washington oregon border. oregons wildlife regs are confusing, washingtons are a little more lax but i want to see what guys that live out there have to say.
there is also a big river with a marsh there which is rare on the west coast

I understand what you are saying, I was burned out with school when I got done with my BS and was not ready for grad school.
But then I got lucky and found a great job working as a gopher tortiose/ES biologist on a pipeline for 2 years. THen the State lifted its hiring freezes and getting on with the state was easy. With this economy, its going to be a while before states & feds start hiring.

I will say this, even with 17 years experience, I have found it impossible to get on with the feds without a masters and/or veterans status. There are so many officers coming off active duty because of the wars, that most if not all jobs with USFWS & the Corps are going to veterans. Not saying this is a bad thing, just a reality of the federal system right now.

Dont be afraid to take a state or fed job that you are over qualified for. We have a lot of people on board with our agency now who started out as biologist aides. Once you are in the system, promotion to full biologist is much easier.

if i cant find any thing i like i am pretty sure i could get a seasonal position with one of the dep departments, since i know a lot of people. either fisheries or the migratory bird department would be cool, i have always wanted to band birds( i had the chance this year but i needed the sixth day of work to pick up the extra pay from a whole day on OT). best part is they end in september, so i would have all duck season off, but i would probably have to find another job

...and the president signed an executive order stating all government agencies will increase their hiring of veterans......you need every advantage you can get that will place your resume in a higher qualification than the competition. Right now if a government agency has a job posted you are qualified for it would pay to apply and not wait. Just watch the news, government funding levels are being cut across the board and hiring is frozen for most agencies.

Carl and Tod offer some sound advice, based on years of experience.

Tod and carl,

Not sick of hearing it at all. Glad to hear from guys in field since am still a lost duckling. Tod i will be picking your brain in january

Nice pictures Andrew. Stay in school as long as possible. This real job thing just kills the hunting opportunities. Unless you can find a job that gives you Oct-Nov off.... Now wouldn't that be nice. I hunted more in one season when I was at Point then I do in 2-3 now. Being a "weekend warrior" kind of sucks. I am able to get out after work until the time change so I can't complain too much. I'm willing to help if I can for a sea duck season on Lake Michigan just let me know what needs to be done. I have summers "free" but of course birds aren't around then.

Pat,
The weekend warrior thing is difficult but I start getting my pension checks starting in May!!
Not bad for a part time job!! John
