Another monster fish

First some bad news - the 5th Annual Travis Bruce Ice Fishing tourney has been cancelled for the year due to lack of ice, and fish as you will soon see. Tourney is being relocated to a local haunt know for having the best walleye around. If we can't catch the fish this year, we can make sure we eat some good fish. Since we will not be able to determine the winner based on fish count this year and who gets to take home the travelling trophy, I got a couple of decks of "Go Fish" and figure this years winner will be the winner of the "Go Fish" game.

Went out last week to tag a couple of fish for the tourney. Went to the spot where there are usually a bunch of fish although typically smaller in size. Drilled a hole, dropped down the transducer and nothing - not a single fish. Drilled holes from 32' all the way to 9' with the same results - nothing. Very strange. There was one other group on the lake we could see and soon they snowmobiled over to our location. They had been drilling holes all day and couldn't locate the fish either. We decided to move to the other side of the lake and try our luck at 10' in a spot that had a weedy bottom, Maybe they were there. Walked over to the spot, drilled a hole and - Nothing again. One single lone fish at the bottom. Figured this was going to be it.

Went to work on catching that loner and a couple of minutes later I was rewarded with this fine catch. Don't know if it is bigger or smaller than the last fish I posted a pic of - you can let me know what you think. Notice the forward arm thrust to make it appear bigger than it actually is. Turned out this was about the biggest fish we caught that evening. Ended up with 35 or so with a total weight that had to be almost up to 2 pounds - maybe - soaking wet...... All went back to grow bigger for next year.

Ice fishing is done for the year. Actually went golfing yesterday - earliest date since I have kept track of this sort of thing. Almost 70 degrees here today.

Ice was long gone here.

The sound is 41+ and im running almost everyday. With the tog/winter flounder opener april first and wicked warm temps i might shoot some fish opening weekend.

(if i can fit into the wetsuit, hence the running)

That's a dandy fish for the future.

We still have ice here and warm temps. I do not ice fish, but while scouting for Canada geese yesterday, I saw some brave souls out there still trying. Smartest guy had pushed out a small boat, "just in case". Hopefully after ice out, the pan fishing will be good for a few weeks from shore, especially for Crappie Bass.

Mark, I love icefishing, I'm always amazed at how stoked we get jigging up a beast like yours! LOL! I hate ice out but I'm a hacker too, looking forward to it this year. Must be getting old. The Mrs. wants to retire to Florida, some negotiations remain.

Dang Mark...do you think that's a citation fish? You mounting that? Sure beats hanging out in the house

What I want to know is,,,,,,,,,,,,,, how do I get in on some of this action?

You are welcome anytime Dave to come north to experience the success we have had this year. I only have one concern and you yourself said so in the last post. It does take extreme talent to catch fish of this size and, well, you know, I don't know if you have it. Anyone with a pole and maggot can catch the crappies you caught.

It was a poor ice fishing season for us this year in terms of #'s and size. Following a less than average duck season to boot. Guess I have to rely upon my golf game this summer to stop the downward spiral. I'm not holding my breath.....

Hey Mark, how do you bait a #0/12 hook?.....hahaha

At least you got out to fish. I bought a new to me 16' Lund Deep V over the winter. Getting it ready for the river now. Can't wait to get back to my "secret" spot and see if the crappies are ready.
