Another sewing project

I'm getting pretty handy with the sewing machine. This is was definitely an easier project then the motor cover. I sewed pockets on the bottom side and put fiberglass electric fence posts in them to span across the cockpit of my boat. A little grass and it will be all ready.

Dang it Darin...you can never let Michelle know that you're sewing that stuff yourself. She'll quickly make me sew my own if she finds out. Won't be long now before you get some salt on it.

Hey Darin,

What kind of machine do you have? I have a bunch of sewing projects. Did you get a used one? I have used a regular machine a time or two. Not really sure what Type of machine is needed for heavy canvas, or nylon. I really like your motor cover.

Another fine job! Great idea on the fence posts. Someone here - Tod Osier ? - told us about driveway markers, too. I used a Lucite rod once on a dodger - snapped half-way through the first hunt.

All the best,

Thanks Steve,

Is there something I should look for in a machine? Or a type that I should stay away from? Do I need A zig zag option?

Sorry I'm a greenhorn at this,

I sewed them on a cheap home sewing machine. I had to look, it is a Brother. I did buy needles and thread form Sailrite that match the Sunbrella. It did good on normal sewing. I was very careful and went slow when I was sewing several layers and I was able to sew through two layers of cloth and two layers of webbing without incident. I think the proper needle made a big difference.

Thanks you guys,

I thought that I needed a heavy duty machine. I might have a relative that has one that I can use.

Zig-zag is nice but not necessary. BTW: Craigslist will probably have good enough machines for about $60.

After learning to sew on a converted treadle machine I found a $5.00 machine at a garage sale. That one served me well for a few years until it broke and parts were N.L.A. Then I bought a very cheap new Singer that fell apart pretty quickly. Then my mom came to my rescue with one of her old machines that just keeps on going. Don't remember the brand but the older machines seem to be built a whole lot tougher. All were regular homeowner machines and did everything I asked them to until they went toes up.

Darin, I looked at the web site for waxed nylon thread, could it be listed differently? Thanks for your post it has me thinking it my be something I can learn to do also.

Steve, I used DB Ultra Dee thread V-69 polyester UV 4oz. Here is a link:
