btw - the full impact isn't felt unless you cook it up in the kitchen. the aromas must be smelled to be appreciated! hehehe even better when there's a few maggots infused into the soupy mess... roommates/wives tend to really like it!
 
Now you're talkin' Clean off any of the large chunks and scoop out the brain then wrap in plastic cut a few holes in it and set it out back to let the maggots get a good start on it. If you really want to save all the fine nasal turbinates then let the maggots do 99% of the work then the simmer wont take nearly as long. Another idea is you may have access to a box of dermestid beetles, that's what the skull cleaning places use. I'm not sure you'd even have to boil it after they got through with it.
 
yeah, but that method (the "rot in the sun") results in more staining of the bone and that doesn't come off easily, if at all.

HEY!!! Tod's a bug guy.... He's gotta have something good back in the workroom that'll eat that flesh right off!! Maybe a quick wash, then whiten...
 
Nice deer Tod. Can you give the specifics on the weapon used to take the deer? Also, what is the deer tick (lyme disease) situation like in your area? We have a major problem with deer in urbanized areas here on the north shore, especially right in my neighborhood. I think 1 in 6 people within a 5 mile radius of my house/neighborhood has had lyme disease at least once. I am hoping to get after some deer big time this year. I have a Mossberg with slug barrel but would like to try the bow too.

The key is gettin most of the meat off before you bake it in the sun. Most of the staining can be removed with a quick dip in a mild bleach solution.

When I was almost done with my first reply is when I thought of the Dermestids. They're clean and will pick every last bit off the skull. You just want to make sure you shake them all out and then kill any that may get stuck inside somewhere. Nasty little critters if you have any mounts in the house!!!
 
Nice buck! I have had sucess with skull mounts (non velvet) by placing them in a fire ant bed. Those little critters will completely deflesh a skull in a couple of days and absolutely no smell so far. 1 tip though once in the mound leave it alone. When you're taking it out have a water hose ready.
