I'm planning a couple weeks in Arizona the middle of December this year to hunt desert quail. Anybody have any leads or expertise to share?

not really an expert, I hunted gambel quail when I was a kid in AZ. Then I was out visiting my mother in tucson this spring and took the dog out for some runs and discovered mearns quail. I will be out there is nov and part of december visting and will bring a gun. :-)

gamble quail are pretty much everywhere you find water and wash's with thicker vegatation. Watch out for the Cholla catus, my dog didn't have any problems expect those, I was picking them out of the roof of his mouth at one point. I don't run boots but it is tough on a dog foot out there, all sand and rock. Gambel will run quite a bit. I am not going to share my mearns info that I learned this spring on a public forum, I hear its enough of a zoo, but if you see a sign like this you may be in Mearns country. PM if you would like to know more on mearns.

In the southeast there are also scaled quail, but they will run a dog in circles from what I have been told and you can find them at elevations inbetween gambel and mearns. I didn't get the dog on any this spring, but will try this fall.

Tod, is there any bird you haven't hunted???

Hope all is well

Fred

Lots and lots of birds left, and I'm having a ball picking away at them :). I need to come up with a way to get out in your slice of heaven again.

Here is a picture I've been meaning of showing you from when we were coming through town:

don't know about desert quail, but I grew up hunting quail in south texas. the blue quail there would run you and a dog ragged and were difficult to get to flush. nothing like gentleman bob. wear your tennis shoes.

Every bird has their own nature, if there nature is to run than I'd revel in the chasing and so will Pete!
