So, I am thinking of adding this 95# crane to my 20' Devlin Honker to lift a 200# layout onto the hull.

Please do not suggest towing.. I still have to get it on the boat to transport. I am not concerned about my ability to lift my share onto the boat... today.. in the future who knows... Plus who ever is with me has to be able to do there share. That is hard to guarantee.

I was thinking of bringing it up through the shelf and hull. Welding a plate to the side, and bolt it to the 3/4" bulkhead. any ideas if this is possible? I could also epoxy a 2x6 to the floor, and lag the base plate into the 2x6.

I love the crane idea and would be interested to hear how it works if you go ahead with it. I am certainly not an engineer but perhaps another idea would be to stay inside the cockpit and come up flush with the face of the inside rail. How about towing the layout? [w00t] I'm serious,,,,,,,,,,,,, mount the winch to the trailer frame. Either permanent or in a receiver similar to a receiver hitch, only vertical.

You arrive at the ramp with the layout secured on top of the tender.
You back down the ramp enough to be over the water and off load the layout, using the hoist to lower it onto the water.
Then launch the tender.

Reverse the process to load.
Pull up to the launch.
Separate the tender and the layout.
Load the tender
Then use the hoist to load the layout.

Pros; No worries about manpower hoisting the layout out over deep water. Don't have a layout and/or hoist blocking your view when operating the tender.
Cons; Extra step/process at the ramp

If you do decide to mount the hoist to your tender, I like the idea of securing the upright to the bulkhead. The forces on the base only would be much greater than spreading those forces between the base and a fulcrum higher up on the upright which is then attached to the bulkhead. The present hoist base could be trimmed on one side such that the upright could be positioned immediately next to the bulkhead.
 
I think you have a neat idea, and look forward to see how you implement it. Instead of the 2x6 though, I would stack up plywood, encapsulated in epoxy. It will hold the lags better, and should not split the way dimension lumber can. If you go with the 2x6, try to rotate the base so the holes are not along the same grain line to minimize splitting potential.

I was think plywood as a better choice also. I'd go one step further and NOT use lags at all. Use thru bolts in the plywood stack-up. Put the head of the bolts on the bottom and counter sink the present floor to accommodate the bolt heads. Epoxy the plywood block in place and then bolt the hoist base to the protruding studs. There will be plenty of surface area for the epoxy and the bolt heads are not going to pull up thru the plywood. Plus they cant spin because they will be epoxied in place.

Only thing is, if you later decide to remove the hoist, you be left with one heck of a door stop.
 
Dave-The idea of mounting a cherry picker to the trailer is an interesting idea. The monitoring it when towing... many times in the dark. The concern of wrapping the tow rope around the prop... and there is ALWAY a concern of the layout diving. When the water is rough, I would prefer the layout up on the tender. Like I said, towing is not an option, do not suggest it. [pirate] [sly] As far as the Layout block my view... in the concern of SAFETY. The top of the cockpit is 31" off the floor. The MLBs that I carry on the bow are about 12" tall... Even if I make TOE room, it should not be over 16". I should be OK.

Yeah, perhaps bolting it to the plywood ( several layers) then epoxying it to the floor might be a better idea.

Troy- I am not thrilled with drilling a 3.5" hole in t he top deck, but... I can always epoxy it back in if I don't like this. The problem with putting inside the cockpit opening, aside from the trip hazard, is that when I go down the road, I transport my 1 man layouts in the cockpit (flat) I do not have any room to spare. I suppose I could transport the layouts on their side.

In either way of mounting the crane, I am concern about any loads that would be put on the boat. I have an engineer at work that would love to calculate the induced loads (I work at a company that makes cranes... he designs them)... but not sure if he knows the strength of Hydrotec Meranti vs Steel... LOL...

I will put a call in to Sam Devlin.

It is actually very possible.

Concern 1:
I noticed the reach has a up to 84". Is that enough for you to reach the layout and swing out of the boat.

Concern 2:
Suspended load extending beyond the gunwale of the boat in heavy seas. Can it pick up the layout where it will be positioned during transport and safely swing to position? How are you going to slow the swing?

Concern 3:
Method of suspension? Cradle? 3 Point? 4 Point? Will you be adding eye bolts to the layout to hold into position?

Your idea is very reasonable. You may want to add second rib in front of the bulkhead to also bolt to the side of the unit with a second welded plate to reduce torque moment of the square tubing. It creates more stability when you have a 200 pound suspended load swinging in rough seas/heavy water conditions. By no means are you ever going to torque the tube so much with a 200 pound load but is till place a lot of stress at the base plate mounted to the floor and the bulkhead. It sounds like overkill but definitely will reduce stress on the boat assuming this is a stich and glue which rely on grain structure in the wood for stability.

This isn't going to be in heavy seas. This is to be used on the Mississippi River, under 3 feet. The Honker doesn't move much in the roughest of moments there. That being said... GOOD POINT. Man power would be what would slow the swing. Perhaps not ideal, but I am not sure that it would be any worse than the having 2 people pulling on a layout to drag it into position and having a wave "rock the boat". The crane would pick it up from transport position and rotate... approximately 135 degrees to drop in the water.

I was planning 4 eye bolts on the layout. The crane would lift 30"-36" and rotate the 135 degrees and lower it onto the cockpit rails, where it would be tied off to the eye bolts in the bulkheas. this is how I secure 2 MLB classics for transport.

This idea is still in my mind. If I had a 25' Duckwater, this would, with out a doubt be what I would do. When talking with Dave McCann this afternoon... We might have come up with a another way to work this. A tilting cradle that tilt port/starboard.
 
Phil you might reach out to Mike Shepard as he has a tilting cradle that he uses for a 2 man MLB. His just happens to be in the front of his boat.
 
I think I have seen his. Pat Gregory had shown me a Coast Guard front...BIG mod V with a UFO on the front in a cradle.
 
Possibly another way to look at this Phil. Not saying it would work but maybe something like this can be modified.

I came across this when I was searching for ways to get my ice fishing shack into the back of the Jeep. It is too heavy to lift by myself which limits my ice fishing. I was looking into all kings of lifts, hoists and whatever.

I know you don't want to tow and I understand why. How about taking this concept and make a cradle at the back of the boat that the bow of the layout "clips/snaps" into. The bow would be out of the water, wouldn't have to worry about putting the tow line in the prop and you wouldn't be taking up room in the boat.

Or something else to look at might be the way people tow their flipover ice houses across the ice. Rather than ropes, the towing device is solid. If you google Clam, Otter, Frabil or any of the flipover manufactures, you will see what I mean.

I use a tilting cradle on the front of a 19' alweld.

I can still pull a mlb II up the ramp by myself while standing back by the motor.
And I'm getting to be an old guy.

I just pull up the anchor and use the anchor rope to pull the layout up and into the boat. Don't have to lean out and touch the layout boat at all.

I made the prototype out of scrap lumber and barn door hinges and never got around around to having an aluminum version fabricated.

I have a Marsh rat that will sit on the front of my boat which is similar to a Devlin snow goose. The front cradle fits into a hitch receiver that is in the bow. and then I have another bracket that rests on the gunnels towards the front of the cockpit. When on the water I just use an anchor line to pull it up on the bracket and slide it in the boat. In my driveway its not as easy because I don't want my marshrat dragging on the rough cement, but on the water it is easier than I thought it would be. If I had a boat that was 200lbs I would put a roller on the front cradle like a drift boat trailer and have a winch that could be mounted in the cockpit and just crank it on up.

This has been working well enough for me that I haven't changed anything since I cobbled it together.
I just throw out the rear anchor and back the boat up. If the anchor sets the boat slides right out.
Then I just let out the front anchor line, and drop it in position.

To pick up the boat, just unhook the rear anchor line from the bridle, let the boat go, pull in rear anchor.
Then go around and snag the front anchor line and with the boat in reverse line everything up and pull in.
It actually pulls up easier with the boat having a little reverse speed to keep everything in line and "plane " the front of the layout up a little.
Especially in rougher water.

I did put a eye on the bottom front of the mlbII to attach the front anchor line. It helps lift the front of the layout up the ramp.
Probable not necessary but works great.
