i got a wild hair about hunting over swan decoys, even though you can't shoot them where i hunt. does anyone have any success stories? i have one hell of an imagination and i think it would be pretty awesome to body boot in rig with a white sweatshirt on. If anyone has tried making swan v boards arm length and dimensions of birds would be awesome! are they too tall? could they get top heavy? thanks in advance!

I have intentions of making some...someday...my initial plans are 4" arms and silo bodies 32" long

Lou,
I imagine you must be sitting in a layout. Did you just sit upright in the boat with that suit on? Or did you lay down until time to shoot, as you would normally do? How did it work?

Mike,

I supect Lou may have left for the Ohio show already so to answer your question; Lou is standing in the water on the lake bottom, no boat at all.

We were lacking the white hoodies...but here's a better picture of what's going on:

thats awesome! what thickness plywood did you use? is there a thread on here that shows construction? it looks pretty self explanatory but ya never know! how did the birds react to the swans?

Dave,
Thank you. Guess if he was standing, he never had to lie down..... Im thinking that might work with the layout boat for my couple friends that are too tall to lay down flat in my boat.

Lou (or anyone else)~

Silos??? My brain is grinding along very slowly....short for silhouettes????

Thanks,

SJS
Steve,
Yes....short for silhouettes. Most folks couldn't spell beyond.....silo.......doh. ;) Silo just became our "slang" for that.

Here's a pair that I made.

I floated them twice and they've been in a friends decoy barn ever since.

The legs are 6' pieces of pine 2x3's....I ripped a slot in the end of them, and if I remember correctly the swans are 32" or so long. I sealed the living crap out of the 1/4" ply with spar after painting tightbond 3 on them and covering them in a mix of cedar and cork dust.

They still need the black painted on them, but look great on the water. I plan on making 3 or 4 stick ups like Chuck made and using them next season a lot more.

dave those are exactly what i was thinking. I got started on the stick ups today for body booting. i made one box out of wood and the other two out of fiberglassed foam. Im not sure how many dave sikorski's their are in md but i think we have a mutual friend jay flemming. he told me he was on his first hunt with ya. I have been friends with him for a few years.. a great dude and a bad ass photographer. How was the ducks reception to the decoys? Any reason you didn't keep using them?

There are two Sikorski clans in MD and I think I am the only Dave, and yes, Jay is our mutual friend.

I have a bunch of foam swans too, and didn't remember that I had left the boards at a friends club. I found them this year, and fully intend to get them back out on the water this year. I always put the swans at the head of my rig and a ways out of range. The ducks love them.

We'll have to do some hunting together one day and bring "Flem Dog"
