We had the near full moon and heard two birds drop in about 10:00. It was the first time I had heard them at night. Very cool to experience the move of the fall.

I heard there was some cold weather up in the north that has them on the run.

Tonight should be as good with the big moon out.

Bob ,

Did not hear them around here , but i saw about 10 at the club Saturday , great to see them around

Yesterday afternoon in central Maine--65, calm, sunny.

Mid morning today--58, calm, a few clouds.

Mid afternoon today--raining like hell, thunder and lightning, thought I might see a tornado.

40 degrees now, clear as a bell with a bright moon, and wind just starting to turn NW. Supposed to blow pretty good from the NW tomorrow.

I'd bet woodcock, ducks and geese are all headed south tonight and tomorrow night.

Gun Dog had a great and very funny article recently about woodcock and grouse hunting. Had me chuckling a few times because I've found myself in the same situations lately and over the years. We've been on the timberdoodles since late August. My pup loves hunting them. She's probably had close to 30 finds in the last 6-8 weeks. We put up 8-10 birds on the opener and she cleanly pointed half of those. Now, if I could shoot the buggers we would have had a limit of 3 birds. Only managed to knock down one (her first bird), but had a lof of fun. I'll tell you, there is nothing quite like watching a bird dog work some really thick cover and then suddenly slam into point on a bird. I enjoy that as much, if not more than actually seeing one tumble down after the shot. Good stuff!

Based on the absence of ducks this morning after several mornings of seeing good numbers, I'd guess birds are moving south with the cold front that hit here yesterday. I'll be hoping some of Shermies birds make it to me before tomorrow morning, because it sure looks like the bulk of the resident birds are gone.

Yesterday in 45 minutes before work I had 4 bunches land in the decoys or get shot trying, and birds in the air pretty much constantly, including one flock of close to 30 mallards. Definitely had mallards, blacks, ringnecks and woodies around; there might have been some teal mixed in, too.

Today I saw a single duck in an hour (high overhead, flying fast, and before legal shooting, no less) then paddled all the way around the pond and up the inlet and did not put up a single bird--not even a cormorant or a merganser.

The big flock of geese that has been in there every morning since mid September was nowhere to be seen.

jeff were into them now ,there coming everyday now ,we see new birds everyday ,,big flocks of geese first time in a long time for me one flock out on the river was at least 2 miles long and id have to say conservativly at least 3000 birds,as for ducks man there on the bay Blacks by the hundred...sat and watched them for lunch yesterday,,,,they just follow the tide line in and out ,the bloody muck makes it dangerous to go after them, and mother nature can be nasty on the bay o fundy one has to time the bore and the tide right and have a favorable wind and storm more or less to have a good shoot... a safe one at least... one were you still have your dawg at the end of the day...

ill do my best to scare them your way...

shermie...
