Any uses for a bent steering cable

Last weekend the steering rod that passes through my outboard motor bent. Had to cut 6 inches off the end to remove it from the motor. It's for an ezy-stik steering system. 13ft long. Hate to just throw it out. Anyone know of any use for it?

Larry,

Must be a common problem with our set-up! I've had to carefully straighten mine a few times now when I've leaned on it to drag my fat butt back in the boat.

I've got a 15' NFB (no feed back)steering cable and helm in the barn that is cut off in the same manner because it rusted fast and I mushroomed the end trying to drive it out. So if there is a use for cut off steering cables...

Have a great season Larry!

yeah, the guy that sold me the replacement said he sells a lot of them. Someone needs to invent a guard for it. All I did was bump up against a log pulling away from the bank. Lesson learned.

Thanks Gene, Have a great season yourself.

Larry, could I use it shorted way up as a shift cable on my tiller extended outboard? I would build some brackets I imageine... Dave

Dave,

Its probably way too fat for a gear shift cable. I'm not sure if your motor could be converted for remote shift/throttle controls.

My motor can be converted, but I don't want to.... I want to stick with the tiller, but have added an extension.... the issue is I still need to go all the way back to the motor to shift. I have some ideas in mind to move the shift up along the tiller extension. Need a short push/pull cable. If you are going to trash it, let me play with it.... Dave

Dave,

check out powertiller.net alows you to put throttle and shift controls on wooden tiller and keep the look of a sailing sneakbox.
i still have the cable.

That is a slick set up for a sailboat, too much on my sneakbox.... I have a simple 15hp, pull start OB. I already made the tiller extension and it works well, but it would be fun to play with a shift mechanism that moves up with the tiller extension too. I have some ideas in my head, just need to find a push/pull cable that will do the job. So hold onto your broken cable if you don't mind, I try to meet up with you next week one evening, unless you want to stop down and see the sneakbox progress?
