Pete,
Styptic powder helps clot. I would also keep wide, 3-4 inch Coban or vet wrap handy. It is good for pressure dressing. It is strechy and sticks to itself. You may also want to talk to your doctor about whether it would be appropriate to carry a tourniquet due to high risk activities in remote areas. Tourniquets are a double edged sword since you can lose a limb if used too long. Of course, bleeding out isn't great either!
Do you have a alert bracelet? It is always nice when first responders know.
