Anyone Have Expirience With Pacific Dories?

I traded some decoys for a 19ft. dory, motor and trailer. I have not had it in the water and it will be sometime before the ice is off. The pattern is a Glen-L Little Hunky Dory. It is 7'6" wide and quite deep. My question is although dories have swept up pointed bow, they still flatten out in the hull. How well do they handle seas over 3-4 feet. I am planning on using as a tender boat for the Poygan layout boat.

Mike, they are made for working on the ocean where 3-4' seas mean a whole different thing to 3-4' seas inland. I think you have a nice boat there for Wisconsin waters.

The seas I was referring to was Lake Michigan. I have never hunted several miles out, but this season I wanted to chase some "squaws and skunks" or maybe motor across to see you Lee! Mike

Well, you'd have the wind to your back coming accross. I'd meet you halfway in my BB2. I bet it would be at least as good as a Lund...not sure how they are built for speed though. You have a 50 on it right?

It has an Evinrude 55. The guy I got it from mostly had a 35hp on it and said it scooted right along. He says the 55hp really scoots it, even when loaded.

Mike,

are the sides "too high" to comfortably pull a layout up into the boat?

I'll see you at the decoy show...any pics of it?

Eric, I only have to carry the layout on the tender went it is on the trailer. The Poygan Layout tows...even when the tender is on plane. She rides high and dry. Mike

Mike,

Can you bring some pics to the show of that?

I would love to see that layout in person if you don't mind showing it off a bit. Let me know please.

Good luck with the new boat.

Eric

Eric, I'll get some pics. A friend of mine in Princeton has the plans and still makes them. He is the same guy who just designed and built the new Final Approach boat that is soon to come to the market.

I have a 22ft dory I use going over the worst bar on the pacific coast the Columbia river, and also out of seaside oregon thru the surf.....they are made for wind to 25 kt and waves to 8 ft although I would recommend more the 3 to 5 ft....the bad part of a flat bottom boat is the wind drift is fast ... you ll feel very safe in these boats however with the deep sides.......Im not sure I would want to use a 19ft dory on the Pacific Ocean except on days with small tides and low winds........The Pacific city dory is a classic and has been used for over 30 yrs
