I would recommend obtaining your own domain name. Blogspot and others offer a good service, but if you're going to get serious about blogging, get your own domain.

Hope you have the time for it. It takes A LOT to do it right and keep your hit rate up.

I did the Google blog thing... but like most things technical, the directions start off as if one is already an expert.
