Anyone want to trade me....?

Anyone want to trade me a fine English Purdey shotgun for 25 DVD's? Hey I can be as tacky as those at the top.

Seriously this is not only a terrible embarrassment to the office of the President, but to the American people as well. I know this is not waterfowl related, but I needed to vent. Thank you for your tolerance.

I work out in the woods and don't watch the news on tv . . .
what's the background on this?

Too bad O'Rielly isn't on the radio anymore - that's where I got most of my news.

PM Brown came from England to visit with Obama and talk about a "New World Deal". Heads of state often give each other gifts when meeting. Due to Obama being the first black President, Brown brought a gift of a pen or pen stand made from the wood of an old anti-slavery ship from England. He also gave a certificate or the commissioning of another anti slave ship, and a first edition copy of Winston Churchills Biography. The gifts signified our ongoing friendship with England.

Obama gave Brown, who is nearly blind in one eye, a set of 25 DVD's of Popular or "Classic" American movies from the past 50 years. Unfortunately, American DVD's do not play in European format(PAL). The gifts given to the Obama daughters were also very nice, and in return Browns kids got models of airforce one and a few other trinkets.

Michelle Obama also sent back the bust of Winston Churchill which was given to the Bush Admin as a sign of solidarity between the US and UK in the War on Terror.

It sounds like Obama isn't quite the diplomat his supporters touted him as.

Then again, I bet the Hamas will like the 900 million we sent them, so that's a plus.

As Nick asked above, what is this all about?

When world leaders meet for the first time it is customary to give gifts. Something that has meaning to both countries.
Obama received from the UK PM Brown a pen holder made from wood from a British anti-slavery ship, the papers commissioning the sister ship of that anti-slavery ship (I believe Obama's desk is made from wood from this sister ship) and a fist edition of a Churchill biography. Obama gave Brown 25 DVD's of famous American movies. While "Psycho" is a movie everyone should see I don't think that is a fitting gift for a world leader unless Chavez is visiting the White House.

I should have refreshed before I posted my reply after reading this thread, Dave beat me by a good bit.

Sorry I didn't know about this. I guess the best that can be said is from another American Classic on DVD -

Bugs Bunny to Yosemite Sam - "What a maroon"

Democrats elected an Idea. They ended up with a man. How can he not disappoint? Although, it would be nice if he could refrain from offending other countries too.

have to do with ANYTHING? I AM BLIND in one eye and I still enjoy watching movies....

And come on....who cares what format they are in.....its SYMBOLIC and no one expects them to be watched, or used, or read.......

Jeeeezzzz of all the things going to hell in a handbasket right now and this is what the criticism is?

The blind part was brought up by a number of members of the press. They noted that it can be uncomfortable for people that have eyes of different abilities to watch TV for an extended period of time.

I am embarrassed by the fact that our president thinks a gift of 25 DVD's is symbolic.

I agree that it's not very important, but it is definitely worth a mention, we all need a laugh these days.

Steve,
I don't think the criticism is just "These are stupid gifts" it is that this is a stupid administration and it is spreading to the congress, both D and R. Can anyone defend Timmy Geithner at the treasury?
These gifts just show the total lack of understanding he has. While he is insulting long time friends of this country he is spending money like he can print more...

Oh and if anyone thinks I'm just a republican defender I think the last administration had just as big of problem at treasury. While he might not have been as dumb or indecisive he was more ego driven and power hungry. No banks should have been forced to take money just to spread it around and to gain control.

btw I also see no point to the blind in one eye line. There are people who are totally blind who enjoy 'watching' movies.

heck look no further than Hillary's dumbass goof with the "smart button" that she presented to the Soviets last week......got that one totally wrong and while she smiled you can bet that some proof reader is in a gulag somewhere over that one.....

My criticism was over the "blind" reference....WHO CARES....

I like Dave's answer that we all need a laugh....that one works for me cause God knows we do....its just that, with the economy circling the drain, I could care less what gifts got given to who and whether those were appropriate or not......

Steve

Fair enough...but to play Devil's advocate, I think people are pointing to it as further evidence, not as a one-off. Yes, there are greater things to worry about, but when you tally everything up, including this debacle, it paints a picture far different from the person we were told would lead this country.

For the record, I don't get the "nearly blind in one eye" thing either (or, eye-ther). I can only suppose it was a petty attempt to show further ignorance...giving someone partially blind a set of DVD's...

so I'd say this about the reporter....if it was one of the LIBERAL RAGS, (anybody but Foxx according to the Right), then good, that proves that they aren't going to let him walk on stupid mistakes.....if it was Foxx then...well....just reverse the above and establish that they are going to be as biased for the next 4 years as the other side was for the last 8....

Me....I figure the guys been in office for less than 100 days...I'm not going to condemn him over a stupid choice of gifts.....I'll reserve my condemantion, or praise, for more important stuff that doesn't include meaningless gifts to visitors......

Steve,

Never saw this coming. We agree on something political. Wish I could resist these political musings, but I cannot. Being one of the very few Dems who enjoy this website, I too will give Obama more time (been in office for less than 2 months) and wish him well with the things that really count. I will be as critical of him as I was Bush if he doesn't get it right.

One thing though, all of us better wish him well and hope he gets it right, because if he does not, we may relive the great depression.

One more thing, this thread will miss Lee Harker's input - didn't know him but respected his wit and horsesence. Bitter pill to swallow for those of us who love this site. Hope he is in that great marsh in the sky passing up shots because he already got his limit.

Respectfully,
Bill
