Arkansas set their season dates/limits

LITTLE ROCK – For the 13th consecutive season, waterfowlers in Arkansas will have a 60-day season to pursue their passion. Waterfowl season was set by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission at today’s monthly meeting at the agency’s headquarters in Little Rock.

Duck season dates are Nov. 21-Nov. 29, Dec. 10-Dec. 23 and Dec. 26-Jan. 31. The youth waterfowl hunt will be Dec. 5-6. The statewide Canada goose season will be Sept. 1-15 (bag limit five) and Jan. 10-Feb. 1 (bag limit two).

Duck bag limits will be no more than 6 ducks consisting of:

4 mallards
3 wood ducks
2 redheads
1 black duck
1 pintail
1 canvasback
1 mottled duck
2 scaup

Bag limits on Bayou Meto WMA were changed to allow two mallard hens instead of one and three wood ducks instead of two. The daily bag limit remains at four ducks with no more than three mallards on Bayou Meto.

Northwest Canada goose zone season will be Sept. 26-Oct. 5 with a bag limit of 2 geese. The statewide Canada goose season will be Sept. 1-15 with a bag limit of 5 geese and Dec. 26-Jan. 31 with a bag limit of 2 geese.

White-fronted goose season will be Nov. 14-Dec. 5, Dec. 12-Dec. 24 and Dec. 26-Jan. 31 with a bag limit of 2 geese. Snow, blue and Ross’ goose season is Nov. 7-Dec. 24 and Dec. 26-Jan. 31 with a bag limit of 20 geese. The Snow Goose Conservation Order will be Feb. 1-April 25, 2010 with no bag limit.
 
That date for the juive hunt SUCKS. I was hoping for first weekend in feb option. Oh well, ms went that way, and I guess that means tj gets 2 juvie hunts! travis
 
Bayou Meto WMA has a reduced bag limit. The State limit is 6, w/4 mallards, of which 2 can be hens. Bayou Meto gets so much pressure that it is basically the proving ground for whatever new regulations come down the pipe to try and reduce overcrowding, skybusting, etc.

For example, in addition to the reduced bag limit, you can only carry 15 shells per person. And, they mean it...to the point of pulling boats over in the ditches in the morning and going through bags, gun boxes, jackets, waders, etc. And don't try to be a good steward and pick up someone else'e empties on the way out. Don't even have a 2-year-old, rusted, algae-covered empty stuck up under a boat seat or in the bilge... The first year or so, they didn't even allow extra shells in the truck back at the ramp - they've lightened up on that, and now the rule means in the boat or on your person while hunting.

You can only shoot #2 shot or smaller - which, in the timber, is actually something I agree with, though it still goes against my grain. The hope was to get people to quit "treetopping" ducks that either weren't working, or working someone else's hole.

Bayou Meto also has a 25 hp limit on motors. People still race for holes, bump their boats, push people out of the way, etc., but they aren't doing it with 40 or 50 horse motors.

I agree. Should've been February - better success for the kids.

But, what I hear is, "well...the guys have already shut down the camps, people have pulled the boards on their fields, all the adults are tired from a long season, blah blah blah..."

I guess it's legit, but if it's really for the kids, set it up for the best outcome...

Ya know, last year on the juive hunt, tj REALLY wanted to kill a pintail. I had 3500 on a zero grade rice field the day before the hunt. We drove out no lites, flushing 1000's out of the fields, specs, everything. Set out a bag of deeks, and by legal had 300 pins on the water in front of him. Double checked the time, and said, ok, stand up and kill your pintail. Had he missed, well, he'd had about 20x more REAL chances to connect. Thats what a duck hunt ought to be when your 11, ate up with it, and wanting to kill your pintail. He ended up with a green head, and a nice drake sprig for the day, and the next day we brought 2 more kids and they both killed their first ducks. Tj didnt shoot very well on sunday, cause his shoulder was pounding from sat! hehe, but he was glad he put those other kids on their FIRST ducks. A friend took another kid to our pit field that sunday, and he didnt connect, but he got ample shooting and is hooked as well. Easily a case of 20 gauge shells shot on our farm by 4 kids on a weekend in feburary.

TJ had at least 10 offers from people wanting to take him hunting, including a sponsored hunt at Mallard Manor given to him. He said give it to another kid, he wanted to go to our farm, and bring those other kids to our farm and share with them. No telling how many people I know, where looking for either kids to take, or more kids to take. How could anyone be ready for to be over so much they miss the best weekend of the year? duck hunting in feburary, and kids.

Oh well. Now tj gets 2 weekends all his. I know a little green seed cypress break in ms he'll be on, and shooting gadwalls at 25 foot the first weekend of febuary!

A friend I havent spoke too in a couple months called while I was writing this. Hes gonna try to drive an hour and half tommorrow to see tj run his dog (spookey) in started. Tried to tell him good luck on facebook, but when it wouldnt happen, called to see if he was with me (tj been known to skip a friday before a hunt test, or during duck season! hehe). He said if he didnt make it for the run, he'd be there for the ribbon, and a cold drink afterwards... folks like that aint in a hurry to end their duck season when theres kids involved. travis
