Hello All, thought I would share my fresh run salmon with you all. caught this one just before easter on the river wye in wales. it was completly the "wrong type of day" for salmon fishing. Very bright water levels are low, but due to our jobs me and my mate have to book in our fishing way in advance so we take what we are given.

I got to the first bend in teh river and there was a deep pool on the opposite bank more a gully in teh rock bottome than a pool. was fishing with a 15 foot double handed fly rod and was just managing to get the fly in the fast water. I was thinking what a waste of time but thought I may get a pike or possibly a chub, as both will take a bigish fly.

Then Bang it was on, could feel its head shacking and its tail thumping, man they hate to be caught. after a lot of pulls across the river and down out of the bend. i managed to net him. we my mate did with a bit of threatening with what would happen to him if he knocked it off and how as i was driving he may be riding home WET. we managed to bank it. to a lot of celeberating and back slapping.

Photos were taken and then it was returned, it still had the two sea lice on it tails body.We estimated it at between 14-15lbs, it was nice and thick.

I have fished that stretch of river for the past 3years for nothing over than coarse fish.

to see it slip back into the river depths was the icing on the cake, we have to return them this time of year by law and due to poor levels over the last few years i always put my salmon back unless they have been gill hocked.

Thanks for looking. Paul Scott

Paul,

Enjoyed reading about your fish, nice story and thanks for sharing. Also nice to hear that fishing mates are treated with the same respect over there as we treat each other over here. :>) :>) :>) as in no respect at all, HA! I guess we are essentially the same, all around the globe.

Very awesome catch. Love to see some sea run atlantic salmon left. Not a whole lot of them on this side of the atlantic anyways. At least not until you get well north of the border.

Thankyou guys, really was great fun. Am still smiling. I caught it on a medium sized silver stoats tail tube, double. With just a little bit of red in it.

Thank you again for your nice comments.

That's really slick Paul. I spent a bit of time in your area. I did some inspection work at the Baglan Bay power plant. We stayed over in Swansea. It was when the big 7 nations tournament was in Cardiff back a few years ago. Incredible time on St. Paddy's day down on Wind Street in Swansea. Beautiful part of the world you live in over there.

Cheers!,
Ron

Beautiful fish and an awful nice part of the world to fish/live in too! I fished the Wye and Usk drainage about 6 years ago this time of year and had no luck. A lot of rain that year and cold too, did manage a nice little brown just out town near Brecon...my wife's family originates from there via Australia.

Nice fish, just got my license today and then I read this. That terrible Dave catching trout and now this. I got all those other things to do before I can go fishing. You fellows make it rough. When I go I doubt I will get any that big. That a really nice one.

Thankyou Greg and Mark.

Pat, you know I was thinking something something like that. Not now but if and when? Would like to carve it half thickness in solid one piece hard wood. Think I need bit more carving skills yet. So perhaps a project for the future.

Wispete, mate you never ever know. That's what I like about fishing. Fish never ever read the same books about fishing as we do.... Let us know how you get on.

I know what you mean about time. I have a 16month daughter and my day off today I will be looking after her, as my wife works part time, Which is brilliant we are blessed to have her. But a little part of me is thinking about the river or the decoys that need finishing off......... Heck perhaps if I keep her busy in the park this morning I may get half an hours sanding time why is naps?? Trouble is I tire quicker than Freya does....

That is a beautiful fish, Paul. Sure did enjoy reading the story. You mean you can't go there to fish when you want to?
Al

Nice fish Paul. I had the good fortune to fish for the "King of Fishes" in New Brunswick a few years ago, quite an experience.

I spent a nice week in 1985 driving around Wales- beautiful country. To this day, I want to go back Llangollen to fish.

Very kind chaps. Thankyou glad you enjoyed the story Al.

I tempted fate.. there was no peace for daddy today, Freya was having none of it, napping is for wimps I could hear her little brain thinking. Back to work tomorrow for a rest....
