August - What's new on your workbench?

Here's another Lake Okeechobee style BWT. I know the colors off, but I'm not exactly sure how to get it right. I wish I could take Jody's or Mr. Furia's class. Looks like the students put out some fine looking birds
.

Tom, Looks great. Even better on this big screen then my phone.

Jeffrey, Color looks pretty darn good to me. Lots of variation in the colors of ducks in my opinion. I bet someone here could help you with mixes if you are concerned about it.

Pat, Your killing me. I finally got in the shop yesterday and did some sanding and drew some lines on a few decoys but otherwise its slow going. Its my busy season at work and all I want to do is carve instead!

Brandon - Just having fun and getting ready for season... A few more decoys to make, then, the knives go away and the shotgun comes out... Saw our first bluewings this past weekend. It's time...

Pat, I like that the delta Cans stayed true to form with your personal take on the paint . The combo works. Do you have a whole rig done yet?

Toms,
I like the Black and the spoonbill. Chris and I have been plugging along this summer and I have a number of decoys in all stages ( someday I will learn how to post pictures). Just received a box of Shang's patterns that I won at last months decoy auction. I am going to make a rig of three Blacks to hunt over and a Mallard or two. It is so interesting looking at the patterns and just thinking about what it would be like if you could stop by his shop and talk decoys. I will see if I can get Chris to take some pictures of the patterns and post them.

Bob - The can in the picture has one of the original metal keels used on the Ducharme decoys from the 1950's made by the Gaylord's at their Ingersol Machine Milling Co. I'm just about done with the entire Delta Marsh Rig and will post up some pics when complete. I am even having a special brand built specifically for the rig. The rig includes scaup, redheads, whistlers, butterballs and cans to include 5 Delta Marsh Style cans. I'm also including some bluewings with 2 of them being Delta Marsh style.

In addition, we'll be hunting some vintage decoys historically significant to Delta Waterfowl to include a Duncan Ducharme can, Doc Pirnie Divers including a whistler, scaup and redhead, all drakes and, a pair of Torry Ward bluebills. We'll be hunting with some of the Delta Staff and, staying at Kirchoffers' Lodge. A dream hunt for sure...

Here are a few on-going projects.

The first is more "Over my workbench" rather than on....(that's a Tom Barb Spoonbill in the background)

The Skidmore Scooter is on sawhorses - next to my benches...I just re-installed the pipe oarlock stanchions so they will no longer allow rainwater to enter the hull (I had to excise a fair amount of rot):

Here is a Redhead Sleeper - a hollow pine "mantel piece" bird. I will paint it with oils:

I fussed for the better part of an hour this morning - to get rid of a dime-sized flat spot on the breast:

All the best,

Pat, I love those teal. I got a few chip brushes and am going to attempt some of your painting techniques. Steve, nice work on that redhead. It has great lines. And the spoony looks right at home!

Steve - Love the sleeping divers! Awesome! Pat

Tom - If you haven't already watched it, I fully paint a hen bluewing on this clip on The Decoy Shed... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8DQkKGAi6cI
I've gotten a ton of mileage from trimming my own chip brushes. It's the staple of my painting. The goose in this segment of pictures is also painted with a chip brush... Let me know if you have any questions... Pat

Very nice work everyone!

This broadbill isn't new to my bench, it's roughly shaped blank had been sitting on top of the fridge in the garage for about two years. I picked it up and started working on it again about a month ago. I got the pattern for this bird from a Ken Harris that I took photos of. Hope to give it a light sanding and seal it tonight.

This one is off the bench, passed its swim test last night, and is headed to our local DU auction. Tan cork, basswood, and oils.
