BACK TO THE BB III BUILD

I installed the sheer clamps and strong back yesterday, I used 1" mahogany for both. I cut out another bow piece to accept the strong back, that makes the bow 2 1/4" thick. I installed the strong back without using screws, just peanut butter. It seems to be quite solid. Do you think I need to add screws? The sheer clamp was installed using a screw guide just as Eric showed in his build. I was just messing with the decking and it seems like it is going to be very difficult to get it to bend to the radius of the bow. Any suggestions?

I would sink long stainless screws into that bulkhead, but that's just me.

There are three ways to go on the ply decking re bend:

1) assuming you are using 3/8ths... "score" the ply every 3/4 of an inch or so and go half of the 3/8ths thickness deep, or,

2) use (2) 1/4" + 1/8" sheets one on top of the other,

3) or use two separate sheets meeting in the middle and fairing the joint. I did #3.

Looking good Charlie! Looks like we are in the same boat (sorry I coudn't resist). I haven't been able to get to do much lately.

I am working the inside from the bottom up. I measured out the floor support beam and the floorboard. Tonight I lofted the measurements onto the plywood. Cutting it out tomorrow for the dry fit. Also cut out a pattern for a shelf in the forward storage compartment.

Keep up the great work!

Charlie, your pics are great, inspiring and educational all at once. I am right behind you so these pics are very timely, I wish I could post pics; I'll try downloading to my photbuckets, maybe that was a temporary glitch with my account.

Thanks Andrew, Since I plan on installing the decking from port to starboard, I think I will go with option #1. Do you think I should coat the underside withe "peanutbutter" before attachment. My thought is that it will fill any voids and when cured become a solid, curved piece of ply. Any thoughts??

Yes, you fill the voids with peanut butter... I stupidly used maple wood flour which was a bear to fair. I can't really tell how your bow contorts, but before you do all that cutting, make sure that it doesn't contort in a jillion different directions. I can understand wanting to use one piece, but, it may be a lot easier with two... again I don't know that model boat well enough to pass judjement. Perhaps some of the BB III builders can chime in.
