back up lights

That's what I've been debating on doing with my trailer how do you power? Through the existing 4 pin harness or an auxiliary connector.?

I switched my trailer to a 7 pin connector and ran an extra wire to backup lights so they come on and off when the truck is in reverse.

Very cool. I've never found myself at a launch where I'd need them, but I'm sure they'd be helpful!

I tried that some years back with an F-150 but wired the back up spots through the 4 way trailer harness and ended up burning out the harness to the back up lights. Had no back up lights after that. I won't go too big on the lights.

I would do it but my truck and all the new ones run off the canbus system which makes it almost impossible to wire that harness in to the light board. I'll figure something out

Yes my truck was the 7 pin connector and 1 of the connector is for back up lights. I also fine myself backing into ditches, sloughs and river spots that don't have light . So this set up should help out.
Sorry for the bad photo it was my 1st post.

Mike you can tap into the 7 pin connector or tap into the backup lights themselves. those appear to be LED lights, they draw very little power but to be on the safe side I would run them thru a relay. Let the backup light circuit power the relay coil and the relay contacts power the lights. As an added bonus of doing it this way you can add an override switch to turn the relay on when the backup light circuit is off. You will need to add a blocking diode to the switch so you do not back feed the trucks back up lights when you use the switch.

Mike thanks for your help. That sounds like a great idea and I like the override switch ideal. I will try to get that done this weekend and post some photos.

Thanks again Mike
