Band Saw for Decoy Making

Guys I am looking to pick up a band saw to make decoys. Any recommendations? I want to be able to cut out bodies and heads. Why type of blade should I look for?
Thanks,
Frank

Frank I am by no means an expert on the subject but your going to want a 14" saw and you will want a riser block for it. The riser block lets you cut deeper for bodies. I have a 14" delta and have not bought a riser yet for it. I can not do more then a 6" wide body with it. So far I get by but there are times I would like to go wider.

As for blades. I use a 1/4" 4 tpi blade for heads and sometimes bodies. I also have a 3/8th" 4 tpi blade I like for bodies.

I use 14" Delta with no riser block, but I don't cut side profiles so I don't have the need for one. I think my blade is a 1/4" 4 TPI skip tooth.

Good luck

Grizzly 0555 ultimate bandsaw with 6" riser gives you a 12" depth of cut on the 14" bandsaw. 1/4 tpi 4 tooth blades. Hit the search engine on here, this has been asked numerous times, lots of good commentary in there.

Hit the net for some reviews in the wood magazines etc. Grizzly is up there higher than most would think.

If you have lots of money, Laguna etc. are even nicer.

I bought an 18" rikon a few years ago and LOVE it. Its behemouth of a machine, but the last I will ever need.

Frank,

I recently bought a Grizzly 0555 w/riser block after doing a search on DHBP and other web sites. From the multiple reviews I read, it has the reputation of being a great value. The riser block installation was easy enough, and from my limited experience the saw has been working great. The hardest thing I've cut so far is a 8"x14" decoy body from laminated 2x10 (am using the part normally discarded to make a jig for future bodies), and even cutting the 9-1/2" thick top profile was like sawing butter. I did switch to a 3/8" 4 TPI Lennox blade for cutting bodies as the factory blade was not very good.
