well, we found the eider gunning quite slow last week up in maine. slowest ive ever seen. got 2 out of 3 days in so that was a plus and managed to get a few birds. got a nice banded hen eider so that was a treat and also managed to get a good squaw hunt in on the last day but didnt get any pics of that hunt. fun trip anyways and felt good to be back up there. took home 25 lobsters too!! just thought id share a couple pics of the banded bird. best, mark

not to speak for Mark. but I would guess you would call that "salad"

damn it steve. you just HAD to mention "THE BREAKWALL". i thought i had enough of the horizon out of the picture! thanks for that laugh. no lobster eating for me. i just had fun harrassing all those poor bastards in the tank at the fish store, poking fingers at them and watching them go into attack mode. the other guys bought like $300 worth of those things though.....

With 25 lobsters you are going to be the most popular guy on your block when you get home.

Lobster tastes even better than Bluefin.......

Thanks for the number Bill E.

I called them today. I didn't realize that these birds lived this long. The bird was tagged in Nova Scotia in 1998.
I never would have guessed.

Very cool. So how do biologists catch those eiders to band them? Cannon nets on the breeding grounds? Or drive them when they are molting into pens?

They are decoyed into nets that are floating on the water. Little Hank and I helped trap and band several times this past winter and spring. We got some eider and also brant. What a great experience for both of us. The birds decoy in and run into the nets. We then run out in the boats and go bring the bird back to shore. Weight it and do a bunch of measurements and band it before release. Really cool stuff. You should see the work it takes to setup the rig. You thought decoys were work. CHeck out the pic Lots of fun. Hank
