Battery for lights in Devlin Mallard?

I am wondering what the best battery would be to run the navigation lights, LED interior lights, and a spot light in my devlin mallard. What are you all using for your devlin boats? It will only run the lights, do not need it for starting outboard. I would like for it to be as small in size as possible so it can possibly be mounted in the bow storage area. I have been thinking of using a waverunner or jetski battery. What do you think I could get away with?

I would use one of those 12 volt gel cells (cost around $30) that are sealed. They are nice and small and can run your GPS, depthfinder etc. I use a 20$ solar panel to make sure mine stays fully charged.

Jim

I'uve used a garden tractor battery for years. They are the perfect size and pack plenty of power. I sometimes go weeks before recharging. I bought a new one a few weeks ago and got a deal. I went to the local Interstate Battery dealer. He had a whole shelf full of these batteries $10 each. Turns out all the local box hardware stores turn in their "dead" batteries when a customer buys a riding lawnmower and it won't start. Under warranty they replace them and put a charge on the tunred in ones. Same as new for 1/3 the cost.

I use a sealed gel 12v. battery that is intended for electric wheelchairs. It has 32Ah. It costs $25-35, I can't remember. It is about 7"x5"x5". I find a better deal at the battery shop in town than on the web. Also, don't do like Eric and not charge your battery after each use. Greater discharges and recharges decrease battery life. I did like his cheap battery route though.

Thanks guys. I did not realize that just a regular small battery like a garden battery would work good with my lights and spotlight. For some reason I kept having "Deep Cycle" marine battery on the brain because this pertained to my boat.

My 12v. gel for wheelchairs is a deep cycle unlike, I think, a lawnmower battery which is a starting battery. My wheelchair battery is the strongest for the smallest type that I could find.

Kenmack, where can you get one of those batteries? AutoZone, Walmart???

The Battery Store in Huntsville AL. Look in the phone book for a battery store. They should have a better price. A medical supply store might carry them but I'd be afraid of what they might mark it up. Still, they might be able to put you onto a supplier if they don't carry them.
