BB3 Modified Transom - Maiden Voyage (Pics Added)

Eric:

Thanks for the note. I thought very hard about whether or not the increase in displacement would offset the shift in weight to the rear of the boat. I should have paid more attention in physics as your numbers provide clarity...some thoughts:
  • Specs put the motor at 105 lbs (the 30hp Mariner is light for its displacement)
  • At rest, you're right about the amount of displaced hull below the water line. This is minimized by the (small) amount of rocker aft, so I don't think it would completely equalize torque. I'm guessing it's maybe 1.0 to 1.5 cubic feet of displacement below waterline. Placing the fuel tank (6 gal), battery and gear forward helps.
  • On plane, I wonder how it works out as the increase in hull surface is right where it makes the most difference. Not smart enough to do the math.
  • In the end it's all moot, because the operator is, as Chris put it, a "man of substance" and I sit on the rear deck. I never thought about my size in terms of foot pounds. Good grief.
It sure is a sweet ride, though. And note to self...I gotta bolt that motor down. No desire to see that outboard go under. No sir!

Kevin/Tom - didn't realise it was a pic of Tom in a different boat. Nothing wrong with being a man of substance unless it helps water come in over the transom. This is why I asked if you lost any freeboard with your design mod. I swamped my boat last December because myself and a buddy should have lost a few pounds and not added those extra 4 dozen burlaps to the load.
Chris: I was wondering if you thought you were looking at my BB3...a man would have to be the size of Andre the Giant to make a BB3 look that small. Too funny! Kevin

Had one jump off on me one time, Scared me more than anthing. Added two eye bolts to transom and a small chain . now i dont even think about it anymore!!!
