BBIII update

Well, here is my progress thus far. Some of the pics are from about a week ago. She is stitched up on the keel and ready for the sides. I'm going to have to take a little break as my bride is having her gall bladder taken out. Should be back up and running by next weekend. Enjoy!

Tell the wife she's in my thoughts on the gall bladder surgery...praying her the best. Boat is looking great.

Thank you everyone for your well wishes and prayers. She is doing fine now and is in the recovery stage now. Just dealing with the pain of healing up. Should be better in a couple of days.

Harry: I have heard a lot of great things about Obici too. She actually had it at Mary View. Not our first choice but the people were very nice and helpful. Thanks again everyone!

Nice work James. Be careful with those wire tag ends if you have any little tikes and/or pets running around the shop. They're nasty.

Here is the latest. I put the sides on today and dry fit the bulkhead templates. When I drew out the sides I added the thickness of the plywood (9mm) to the bottom of the side or chine edge. This allowed the chine edge to fall just below the bottom of the boat. When I flip it over I will plane off the excess wood and have a better fit. Thats the plan anyway. Looks like it just might work.

I also went ahead and cut the deck curve into the templates according to the plans after I fit them in. I was reading Andrews reply to Charlies post about bulkheads and agreed with what he had to say about too much curvature at the bulkhead. I want the water to run off but don't want my dog, much less myself, slipping off. The only bulkheads I didn't cut curves into are the knees. I'll save them for last. I'll be cutting out the other bulkheads tomorrow and will level out the hull and fit them into place.

Beveled edges ready for the sides.

Station 3 bulkhead. Looks like a near perfect fit so far.

More to follow for sure!

James, That looks real nice. A fun project for sure. Please bend the ends of the wires over. This one of my.......... Well I see a accident waiting to happen. A bloody leg isn't to bad as long as you don't get an infection or a bloody hand just an inconvenience but you can't replace an eye.

Tod: Thats just luan right now on bulkhead 2. It looks like it has been water damaged but its just the "grain" of what ever they make luan out of.

I had the wires bent back but straightened them to loosen them up a little. I got some a little too tight. There is a method that I'll use to keep the wires out of my skin. I'll post pics.

Meanwhile, I cut all the bulkheads out from the templates. Now I am at a point that I'm not sure about. When I fit the bow piece in it really doesn't want to go. When I finally get it into place it has huge gaps (between 1/4-1/2") between the bow piece and the chine. Should I just let that go and fill it in or re-shape the bow piece? I didn't get pics as I was alone when I was fitting it in. Any advise?

The bow pieces are always tough given the compound angles. But once the thickened epoxy fills the voids all if forgotten. That is one piece I never fret over its fit. On several of my boats though I did add another layer of thinner, 1/2" maybe, to back it up since it looks like one part of the boat that will be subjected to abuse like bumping brush and trees.

Damn, you could spear and crush an aluminum boat with that front end and hardly scratch the paint :)

Eric,

Neat thing about that picture is how well the torpedo tube is hidden, can't see it at all. hehe :>) :>)
