BBSB and dogs.

I am heading out to the garage to clean it up since the weather is going up to 15 today Its a nice day to go outside and work ... hahaha!

Anyway I am dreaming of my next build and considering taking on the BBSB in a 12' version. What type of luck have you guys had hunting yourself laying down in the boat tucked into the grass and your dog? Does the dog sit behind you under the dodger?

How about open water with the dog?

i have a dog well in front of the cockpit under the dodger. my dog sits there. it is a little tight but he is getting used to getting in there. it keeps him warm and out of the wind, and it helps me keep him from breaking .

I have a 12 ft BBSB. My dog lays next to me. Its a tight fit but helps keep us both warm. It would be a little roomier if I didnt have flotation compartments in the cockpit. He lays on my right side since I am right handed and shooting will be to the left.
Some people can fit their dog behind them under the spray shield.

My golden is physically on the small size - about 55lbs. He fits nicely behind me, under the spray shield. If it is real cold and he is wet, I will put in the boat next to me, just to keep him a little warmer.

Thanks everyone.

How about send the dog on a bird does he/ she end up tearning across your body to get out of the boat?

James any pictures of a dog well setup?

Brandon, Jimmy and I both have the same boat and hunt together. I recently moved my pup up from behind me to next to me as he does. There is plenty of room and he is marking better than ever. He has never steped on me while exiting. Consider the cockpit width when you build. Make sure there is enough room for you and the dog...............Kevin

He exits over my left shoulder down the gunnel. It took some learning but he is no longer running into my head. I don't have any great pics but here are a few.

Sitting in cockpit. You can kind of see the dogwell under the dodger. Hope these help. Good luck with your build.

James, that's a nice rig and a handsome chocolate. I used to hunt with a guy who had a 14' box with a dog well. They are a good option in a traditional style BBSB...........Kevin

Hi Brandon -

I have a twelve foot BBSB built a few years ago when Don Warren still had the company. At the time I ordered the boat as a kit, I had a chocolate female at about 65 #s and Don put a square opening forward of the main opening for the dog with a small floor. I covered the floor with marsh hay and also have a small canopy for the dog compartment made of an old mesh decoy bag and with a small single bow. This set up worked pretty well as the dog was always behind the gun and her deck was a little higher than mine. All of the water that she brought on from retrieves would drain below my deck so I was not reclining in a puddle. I did add a ton of floatation in 3 areas of the boat but did this in a way that did not cramp the main compartment for room.

One important idea about gunning with a dog in this type of boat is the advantage that a CALM dog can provide. I have owned three retrievers over the last 30 years and have enjoyed hunting much more with a dog than my present dogless deal. I just decided to wait until I have more time and less work before getting the next lab. I have also decided to go British because, as good as my labs were, they definitely could have been calmer. I am very impressed with a kennel (british labs . com ) that was recommended by one of this forum and may give them a try when the time is right.

If you would like a picture of my boat - I should be able to email an image in a couple weeks - as soon as I am competent with my new digital camera and this PC.

I finally found the pic that I was looking for...here is Beau in his hunting spot.

He is steady (most of the time!) so I don't have a problem with getting run over. I usually lean forward and send him. Getting back in, I have him shake off on the after deck and then "kennel" to his spot.

Sarge,

The name is Tom and that is a Bob Brown cedar strip "Field and Stream" boat, which I believe, has its roots in the Zack Taylor school of boat design. There is another thread with pics of Bob's latest boat in all of it's naked cedar glory! haha!
