bbsb dodger in progress new pics

I was looking to buy webbing for the grass loops to be sewn on the new dodger. What size width should I use? I was looking at either 1 1/2 or 2 inch. Any ideas or thoughts welcome. Also if anyone sees or thinks of something I can/should do with the dodger before its complete. This is my first dodger that I've made and first sneakbox I've owned so its all new to me. Thanks for all the help.

I used 2" webbing, found it on eBay. As I wrote before, I would run 2 strips on the bottom and 3 on the top, offsetting the pockets. I would also figure out some kind of a handle just to the right of center at the back loop.. Something I could fit a heavily gloved hand into when running the boat while standing. I am thinking sliding a piece of PVC pipe over the webbing, and sewing the 2 ends down. Either that or find some way to clamp onto the conduit along the edge.

Dave,
How wide is each grass pocket like from one stitch to the next its hard to tell in the pictures of your dodger I was thinking 6 inches between each place where you sew it and I like the offset idea I never would have thought of that

Chris, mine are ~4 inches, 3 inches might be better, The larger the section, the more grass it will need to be snug. 6 inches would be way too big IMO. Did you make yourself an apron too?

used fiberglass fence poles for the cross pieces, rolls up and velcro into a 4" diameter.

Chris, buy plenty of webbing it comes in handy! I also used the webbing and reinforced the seams where the snaps are. I have since used some to repair some gunnel decoy bags for a friend and have a couple more bags to do. I think I got 30 yards of OD 2" webbing for like $19 shipped on eBay. I also bought some 1" that I used for the tieback straps.

No I didn't make a cockpit apron yet but I am going to have the same girl doing all my sewing make one for me I found the stiffeners at HD and also have her make a full leanth engine cover with grass loops as well

Unless you care about the paint on your motor scuff it and paint it camo, It's one less thing you have to worry about or get in the way when your trying to hunt. Cover is looking good though. Joann fabrics has a billion different styles of webbing, bulk or rolls, it's right around the corner too. Chris

I did paint it an ultra flat tan color but was going to have a cover made aswell while we are foing everything thr paint is peeling off already in some spots I guess I didn't ruff it up enough in some spots but I will touch it up before the season starts

I never thought of joanne fabrics I will check it out. I was just gonna go to west marine. You can buy the webbing by the foot there. I think joanne fabrics will have it cheaper though thanks for the input. The main thing I want made next is the cockpit apron. I really like the idea of it. It gives great concelment and protection from the weather. It will keep me warm and dry. It seems easy to make and will roll up small and fit under the deck

I did a bit more on the dodger today before the rain hits. I was having trouble getting the canvas to go around the 2nd hoop without bunching up. So we decided to go with industrial velcro. I wasn't sure how this would work but to my suprise it worked great. Its very strong and it now makes the dodger ajustable and I can make it nice and tight. The best part is it goes on and comes off very easy with just snaps and velcro. We did one row and then two rows of the other to give more room for ajustment worked out great ! ! ! Here are some pictures.

The only thing I see that I would add is a triangle of fabric to the two open areas on each side, there is alot of space there for water to come in and enter the cockpit. Even if you make the triangles and attach them with snaps or velcro so you can still fold the cover back, I know you can get in black 1 inch will work fine, check at joann fabrics . It's not so important when your hunting but when your running the boat it will add much needed protection in snotty weather. Normally the side curtains run back to the oarlocks in order to protect the open area in the front of the cockpit. There isn't but about 3 or 4 inches of freeboard when they are in the water, a wave on the side will allow water in. Behind the oarlock the decoy rack gives you the protection. Oh yeah, before you go check for coupons online. Chris

Yeah I do plan on running it back to the oar locks. From the corner where the top and bottom meet from that to the oar locks and attach to the locks with SS snaps. That will also give me some pull to help hold the dodger up. With that and the decoy racks the cockpit will be protected all around. My thought in doing this is, i now need to extend the dodger coming (white aztek plastic) all the way to the oar locks too. I didn't think of that but i will extend it now and use snaps along the coming and run it to the oar locks. That is a good idea i saw on you dodger that you have the coming all the way around from oar lock to oar lock. Another trip to HD tomorrow is in order for some aztek plastic. Thanks for the input!!!
